Moving to Oxford - where’s best for families?

Hi all,

We’re hoping to move to Oxford soon and would love some advice. We’re looking for a family-friendly area that feels safe, is within about 10–15 mins of the city centre/shopping, and has good primary schools (both state and private).

Our budget is around £800k, and ideally we’d like somewhere with plenty for kids to do – parks, clubs, activities, that sort of thing.

If anyone has tips, I’d really appreciate it:
Which areas feel the nicest and safest for families?
Are there any areas you think are best avoided?
Any primary schools you’d recommend (or avoid)?
Are there good activities for kids locally?
Many thanks

Hinksey it's so lovely. I've known Oxford almost my whole life but just got to know hinksey this year. Also around Florence park is meant to be great too x

Summertown or wolvercote are both nice although you may struggle even with your budget.

Alternatively towns and villages outside of Oxford such as Woodstock, Bicester & Kidlington have lots going on and good community.

Cowley has a super family community. They have all the best activities - it’s not the loveliest location but I often wish we lived closer to it. Trying to get from one side of Oxford to another can be a massive pain.

I think there’s plans to reopen the train station there that connects to London so they may be a very positive impact on house prices in a decade or however long it take to make it happen. 🙄

Agree Summertown and Wolvercote are lovely but super expensive.

wolvercote is nice but not much going on there in terms of hustle and bustle. but close to bike to summertown and oxford in general. also close to canals and nice pubs. jericho has a nice bunch of walkable shops and coffee shops. as you have children i would look for places near parks, like florence park which has a nice coffee spot and amenities, hinksey park is bigger and has a nice outside plash pad and pool,
