Have you ever used exterior wood stain on painted wood?

I read that you are only supposed to use wood stains on unpainted wood, however my fence has already been painted in the past and the only colours I like are wood stains!

So has anybody here ever used a stain on already painted wood, and what happened? Was it a disaster?

Your stain examples that you like won’t look like stain if you’re going over existing painted timber
Stains and paints are not the same thing

as above, fence paint is a layer through which a stain will not soak
a woodstain soaks into the wood, a paint does not

you will end up with a complete blotchy mess
