Bathroom fitter hasn’t installed shower enclosure to manufacture’s instructions

He put on the enclosure profile on before tiling (I asked him to do this so the shower enclosure would fit as the tray was going to be too small and it had already been fitted (he supplied tray and knew the enclosure measurements so I feel like this was his fault ) but he didn’t read the instructions so when it came to fitting the enclosure, the profile was in the wrong place and instead of fitting the glass together using a part, he’s had to silicone the join because if he’d used the correct part the door would be outside the enclosure.

if he had read the instructions instead of guessing where the profile should be it would have fit perfectly. The door still works and it seems sturdy and it looks great, but there’s a leak around the door. ( bathroom only finished 2 days ago)

he’s going to come and fix the leak by adding more sealant. It was a £1000 frameless shower enclosure and including all parts and labour our total cost was about £12200. Am I right in withholding £2200 until the shower is sealed (he’s not going to be able to refit according to manufacturers instructions) and ask for extended warrantee in case we have problems down the line. We wanted this bathroom to last for 20 + years and put a lot of thought into it so I’m really gutted.

He’s making me feel really bad for holding him ‘financial hostage’ and I feel incredibly anxious as I’m a people pleaser.

So you (the boss of the job) told him to bodge it a specific way that you wanted because what you wanted didn't actually fit the space and he did that for you and now you are blaming HIM because you where wrong and it didn't work?

Pay the man it was your wrong choice.

This is true but he only had to do that because he’d bodged the job already by not straightening the wall first (was 4cm out of true), meaning the tray which he supplied was too small for the enclosure. I asked him if he put the profile on first would this make it fit? And he said yes he was confident that would work. I’m not the expert that’s why I hired an expert so I feel like they should make sure things fit and read instructions?

To clarify- he ordered everything. I sent him the shower enclosure I wanted (which fit the space perfectly ) and he ordered the tray, fit the tray, then had to straighten the walls, then the tray was too small. Could you please clarify how that was my mistake?

He has also bodged other small things like the radiator, but everything else is great.

I also asked him to straighten the walls as the tiler said they should be straightened, they were 4cm out of true and the shower enclosure only handles 2cm out of true so I feel like it wouldn’t have worked?

If I had been responsible for ordering the wrong size shower tray of course it would have been my mistake but as I said that was him.

Ok I think I understand why you thought I’d told him to do the wrong thing. The profile was just a little to the left- i asked him to put it on before the tiles, but he should have actually measured where it should have gone, if that makes sense. Instead he just guessed. If he’d fit it a little to the left it would have fit. I didn’t realise I was supposed to measure and tell him exactly where to fit it??
