F & B Skimming Stone versus Dulux Egyptian Cotton

Thought I had decided on Dulux Egyptian Cotton but now I am wavering as to whether to get F & B Skimming Stone. Our lounge/diner is large with south, east and west windows so very bright,Our decorator has told us that whichever paint colour we chose he will get it made up at Johnstones. I have already done one wall in EC and I like it but feel I should try ST too. Spent a fortune on testers and so much time on this that I need to make a decision.

I would stick with the one that you have already used, as you say that you lilke it. Both colours are pretty similar anyway and once its on the walls, it will be fine whichever you choose.

F and B all the way. Different league. I’ve stopped using other paint now as I always regret it.

mamagogo1 · 28/07/2025 16:31

Sounds like you are not actually having the proper branded paint anyway so they both will be similar

Someone did a thread recently about FandB and said to get the colour paint matched for the undercoat and just do the top coat in actual F and B. She had done some sort of test! It am thinking of trying this approach as it mades it more affordable.

I looked at the colour matched skimming stone from Johnstone and it just wasn't a great match. Either buy the real thing from F&B, i like it as i have Elephant's breath in a connecting room and it's beautifully tonal or have you tried Johnstones Intuitive? That's a lovely colour in its own right.

If it’s being colour matched then the quality is irrelevant, this is a tone question that only you can answer. To confuse you more, Zoffany and Mylands both have lovely neutrals.
other brands worth having a colour chart to hand are Little Green and Paper & Paint library

I like both but skimming stone looked better in the bathroom and Egyptian cotton in the lounge. I wasn’t expecting to prefer Dulux over f&b but here we are.

They are quite similar colours, if you're getting it colour matched in Johnstones and not getting the pigmentation and texture of the original paints it's probably not worth bothering with the F&B.

Thanks for all your replies. Going to stick with Egyptian Cotton.
