I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

We're speculatively looking for our next house, and one of DH's favourite things is finding there's a railway line near the back, because it means no giant housing estate going up in the fields nearby. Not right behind us anyway. We did actually live with a railway track about six houses up at the end of our road, and it was quieter at night than here, where cars on a trunk road half a mile away can be heard throughout the night. And a station is always handy.
Not sure any of my no-nos are particularly original. Only one toilet, no bath and no parking would put me off. Oh, and no cupboard space. The storage in this house is shit and I don't want to repeat that mistake.

  • A door that opens straight into the lounge
  • Grey carpets and those horrible cold grey walls
  • A black kitchen
  • Artificial grass and/or an expanse of paved yard instead of a back garden

One other thing that puzzles me - someone upthread was upset at the thought of people parking opposite her drive. Not across it, opposite it. Why?

i kind of get it -normally the side of the road opposite us is a no parking zone but once a month people park there for a religious event and if they are parked either side of the drive as well as opposite then it's mildly tricky to get out, the turn is tight.

Very good double glazing deals with that. I lived by an airport once. Couldn't hear a thing indoors.

It doesn't deal with the horrendous pollution though unless you have a ventilation system.

4444223e · 24/05/2025 15:31

Further out than zone 2

LadyWiddiothethird · 24/05/2025 15:34

Shared access…….nightmare.

Septic tank.

No garage.

Near a pub.

An old beautiful house that has been ruined by painting it a light colour with black windows.

Can think of lots of other reasons,I am picky.

What's with the MN hatred of wind chimes? One's expected to tolerate noisy dogs, children, lawnmowers etc but little wind chimes are a No No!

One weird thing that put me off a house years ago was the name of the road. The 'feature wall' which looked like someone had applied thick plaster and then used the bottle of a bottle to create an effect didn't sell it to me. All I could think was dust, dust, dust!

Wind chimes are like nails down a blackboard, relentless and unescapable. It’s like playing the same tuneless song over and over again.

A public sector salary. Apparently.

🙁

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 24/05/2025 15:36

Open plan
galley kitchen
no dishwasher
no bath
artificial grass or fully paved garden (I’d have to factor in cost to change it if I really loved the house)

Things my current house has that I wouldn’t want again:
no parking
on main route into town (noisy)

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 24/05/2025 15:23

You do know you can change a house name?!

She probably thought there's a good reason for the name!

AliasGraced · 24/05/2025 15:38

A north facing garden
No bath
noisy neighbours
overhanging trees belonging to neighbours
dark grey carpets and black kitchen units /surfaces
no driveway
Close to main roads
under a flight path
Near huge developments
Lots of dark beams

I dislike those too, but I wasn't alive in the 70s, born in the 80s. Everything looks dated eventually, I suppose this is why you upgrade/renovate over the years, unless it is a very fast passing fad, of course which wouldn't be productive. I would love something like one of these, with tv optimal height, for comfortable viewing while seated of course!😍

I remember years ago when I was little we looked at a beautiful art deco detached, in a highly saught after area and road.
We were all excited, mum was talkimg abouy putting an offer in there and then.. then upon leaving, she noticed a name plaque covered by branches. Pulled back the leaves to reveal the name of the property 'The Spiders'.
Needless to say, we never moved in. She said that did it for her 😂

Shame. You can change the name of a house with little formality. At worst, the council might restrict your choice of new names.

See, I wouldn't like that row of naked flames under the telly. I know it's not dangerous, but it just looks wrong to me!
I hate big screens anyway. Our tv is quite small and sits on a low table in an alcove. That would really only be a manageable size in a very big room.

That's in response to @Todaysworldandbiscuits

Edited

They are all so naff. Embarrassingly so.

Agreed, the size needs to be in correlation with the room size. Inlaws had a huge TV on a corner floor stand, and the sofa was literally only feet away, it was uncomfortable to say the least.

Yes, it would make me feel uncomfortable.

LandRites · 24/05/2025 15:46

Conservatory. Blocks out light, conducts all the cold in winter, all the heat in summer. Full of bugs I'd have to remove it, big expense, one less room.

No off-street parking.

If attached to another property, no houses that don't have one large bedroom and one general room not against the neighbour's wall.

Main bedrooms all sharing walls, especially stud walls.

'Internal' rooms i.e. windowless rooms, or too many internal walls removed for 'open plan'.

Older than 1950s, or made with non-standard materials, or having non-standard services.

Wood-burner if it would be a pain to remove.

'En-suite' bedrooms.

Houses where future close neighbours' extensions could significantly block my light.

PorgyandBess · 24/05/2025 15:46

Can’t believe the price of that house! Where I live, that wouldn’t get you anything at all.

The interior and garden are hideous, but not too impossible to rectify.

FloweryCactus · 24/05/2025 12:24

Talk about first world concerns! Many people, including most British under 30s, would just be very grateful for a roof over their heads which they owned.

Jeez, let people have a conversation!

Some aspects of my house have been mentioned as being undesirable and, while it smarts a little I don't begrudge people just chewing the cud and giving honest opinions.

I'm sure you can find a nobler thread if you try :)

MaidOfSteel · 24/05/2025 15:47

I’d never buy a house with:
A school nearby.
A parade of shops nearby.
A neighbour with a messy garden, loads of old cars, scrap etc outside.

housemaus · 24/05/2025 15:47

No bath, open plan, no 'proper' hallway. And, controversially, bifold doors. They look gorgeous but they're expensive as fuck to fix when they go wrong and need constant cleaning, it turns out.

Our current house you access the kitchen through the living room and I don't like it at all (plus it means the layout of the living room is annoying, because there's a door on two diagonal corners) - so a proper hallway that the downstairs rooms come off will be a must whenever we move in future.
