I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

I am sorry but solar panels ARE so ugly. One day no doubt they will be designed to blend in, but right now they are just a monstrosity particularly on period houses.

I wouldn’t even view a house with them.

Solar panels are available that blend in - people just choose not to pay for the extra cost for them. There's no need to put panels on your roof anyway unless you have little outdoor space.

With Greg Wallace. He would piss all over the loo seat and do feck all around the place. Besides which, he reminds me of a boiled egg.

One bathroom upstairs that can only be accessed through a bedroom (lots where we are)

No side access to the garden

Kitchen on separate floor to living room (again lots of three storey 'town houses' like that where we are)

We were looking to move to an area with loads of houses like that.

They were all marketed as 3 beds, but the only bathroom was located off one of the bedrooms. So you couldn’t use that as a bedroom as whoever slept in it would have everyone else traipsing though their bedroom to get to the loo.

Private road one is interesting as some people love this - what’s the main down sides?

What are the responsibilities of each householder for road repairs?

Does everyone have a right of access?

We had this issue come up the last time we moved.

Wind chimes are enough to make me commit a murder 🤣

What's with the MN hatred of wind chimes? One's expected to tolerate noisy dogs, children, lawnmowers etc but little wind chimes are a No No!

One weird thing that put me off a house years ago was the name of the road. The 'feature wall' which looked like someone had applied thick plaster and then used the bottle of a bottle to create an effect didn't sell it to me. All I could think was dust, dust, dust!

TheGreyQuail · 24/05/2025 15:16

Not a favourite with peeps but we save a small fortune with our solar panels. Bills are pretty reasonable as a result.
Hate fake grass, wanky outside bars, conservatories, cess pools a.k.a sex ponds open plan dining /kitchen areas and town houses.

recklessgran · 24/05/2025 15:17

On a main road
no available parking e.g. on double yellows
Caravan/camper van adjacent

Onedayiwillsomething · 24/05/2025 15:18

One bathroom
artificial grass
conservatory/lean-to
no driveway
lots of cars on parked on the street
a trampoline in the next door garden

Could it be that all of the things you mention are variable? Windchimes cause a constant clanging and clinking. DM's garden is covered in them.

KannehDo · 24/05/2025 15:19

I wouldn't say never but I would prefer not to have:

  1. A really steep drive/steps up or down to front door
  2. No off road parking & any parking/manoeuvring difficulties caused by neighbours/visitors cars on a regular basis
  3. Inconsiderate neighbours of any variety

Don't care much about cosmetic stuff, unless it was all new but not to my taste and priced as newly renovated. Likewise, things like whether it has a bath/walk-in shower - that can be changed.

nottoplan · 24/05/2025 15:20

Attached
scummy area / neighbours
beams
listed
small rooms unless there are lots & they can be opened up
knotweed / bamboo/ invasive plants
rights of way across property
weird covenants that would restrict me
access rights
next to a noisy business / school / pub etc
on road parking
small bathrooms with no room for bath
no garage
no storage
no drive
to be honest most things can be changed to suit if the property is the right size and area is ok

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 24/05/2025 15:21

My friend has solar panels on her veg patch, you don’t see them at all. 🤷‍♀️

NagathaCrispy · 24/05/2025 15:22

Any kind of shared, jointly owned or communal area. Our current house has a shared drive and let's just say there are issues!! Never again!

Also - a wall mounted TV, plastic grass, no ground floor toilet or on a gated close.

Todayisaday · 24/05/2025 15:22

I remember years ago when I was little we looked at a beautiful art deco detached, in a highly saught after area and road.
We were all excited, mum was talkimg abouy putting an offer in there and then.. then upon leaving, she noticed a name plaque covered by branches. Pulled back the leaves to reveal the name of the property 'The Spiders'.
Needless to say, we never moved in. She said that did it for her 😂

A good installation, sympathetic to the property shouldn’t be that noticeable. I’m happy enough with the £800 odd a year I’m paid for the export of power, and £4/500 or so I save on my own use :)

It's interesting that there is such huge variation in reports of the savings - is there a reason some people save immediately and/or make money selling back to the grid, and some people don't?

You do know you can change a house name?!

thestudio · 24/05/2025 15:24

One other thing that puzzles me - someone upthread was upset at the thought of people parking opposite her drive. Not across it, opposite it. Why?

Is anyone else counting up how hated their house is?

(So far I have an airport nearby, a bus stop opposite, on a school road, no bath, a hot tub, a garden office, and a conservatory)

Yes!

windowless loo downstairs

built on a hill

small lawn and a bit of paved yard space but not much

4 stories if you count the cellar

big enough I can't keep it clean very easily

not exactly open plan but the entry from the hall to the kitchen has no door (an earlier owner took it off and I could see why, opening that door would have cut off the stairs)

no walk in shower

FullOfLemons · 24/05/2025 15:25

I would have said flight path too.

But flight paths keep changing and planes already fly over all of the nice bits near my City

I would have loved that house and snapped it up!

I got the impression it might have been because the house's name was linked to the history/attraction to creepy crawlies?

Peobably the type and amount of panels. We have two in the back on the roof that came with the house, I have never really even noticed them as the house is 3 story. And I don't even know what they power or how they work, I think they are supposed to power the upstairs boiler which looks like a tardis which I also don't understand.
Bills are slightly cheaper than I would expect for the house, but nothing to write home about.
I think if you are installing from scratch with the aim to sell back to the grid you would get specific set up for this and have a lot of panels.

Oh I love a media wall @Dogaredabomb ,if you're meaning the kind where the wall pops out with TV and then modern fire underneath, and customised wooden shelving built in either side, where you can store books etc. It looks so neat and tidy to me. I really want one in my house, but they're expensive to get installed. I hate to see the wires!

Edited

The modern equivalent of the wall unit from the 1970s.

I also hated the rustic effect artex on walls and also '70's modern brick fireplace/mantels. My mum, who otherwise had fairly good taste (a very early Scandi fan) loved them. Shudder

Very good double glazing deals with that. I lived by an airport once. Couldn't hear a thing indoors.

A public sector salary. Apparently.
