Caught on camera - neighbour filling up my skip

cannehelpit · 22/05/2025 07:44

I need some guidance here please!

I have a skip outside my house. Several times a week, whether there is someone in the house or not, my neighbour comes and deposits something there. Bulky items, not small tiny things. I'd say about a quarter of the skip's contents is now my neighbours. I can see him on the camera crossing over the road, walking about 6 doors up and going back into his house. I don't know him personally, though I've lived on the street about 3 years.

What should I do about this. I do need that space for myself. I have also learned that I am responsible for the contents, so if it is rejected by teh skip company when they come to return, or god forbid there is anything illegal etc in there, I am liable. Also, it's just my skip!

What should I do? My parents say I should report it to the police. My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!

In that case you hire a skip for the whole street to use and be responsible if anyone puts anything dangerous like asbestos, gas canisters , chemicals , paint and such like .
After all its the neighbourly thing to do .

'That’s how long a back extension and a loft extension is taking, it’s a massive job'

Once walls are knocked down that's it, the skip should go. Building works don't generate constant waste once the initial prep is done.

There’s a hell of a lot of work and materials it after that 😂 If only it was that easy! It really, really does generate constant waste.

Catwalking · 22/05/2025 16:01

Maybe ask advice from the Skip company?

Therealjudgejudy · 22/05/2025 16:06

How cheeky. Id totally take your uncle up on his offer!

AutumnLover1989 · 22/05/2025 16:09

Knock on his door and tell him to take his stuff out of your skip now. You have footage and know it's him. Cheeky bugger 😡

A skip on a road could be seen by people <not stupid people just people> to be for anyone's use. The op needs to perhaps get a sign on it, have a chat with the man then as I say get it shifted. We've had skips further down our street just sat there taking up loads of parking spaces like static tips. Just use them and move them!

No, they couldn't. Everyone should know that someone had to pay for a skip. The council don't just land communal skips down on the street for everyone.

Gloriia · 22/05/2025 14:26

On your drive I can understand <although 3 months seems excessive, where do you park your cars?). The op isn't clear if 'outside her house' means on her drive or the road. If it's on the road and has been parked there ages the bloke maybe thinks it's for anyone. She needs to A. Politely tell him it isn't and B. Get it moved asap if it is on the road.

On what planet are skips "for anyone"?

EdisinBurgh · 22/05/2025 16:57

Where I live, “skip fishing” is a popular hobby especially for people who like to upcycle and reuse.

My neighbour just rescued a load of old ceiling beams which he turned into raised beds for his vegetable garden. Someone else I know found a set of kitchen knives and a le creuset pot. I found an old gate. There’s a lot of house clearance stuff being skipped. My uncle can’t walk past a skip without having a nosy and finding something to rescue and reuse. Amazing what people throw away.

I wouldn’t fill up someone else’s skip though anymore than I’d put my rubbish in their wheely bin.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/05/2025 17:07

I think some people have a sixth sense for treasures in skips, @EdisinBurgh - it goes along with the ability to find the best charity shop bargains. I have a friend who has found some lovely things in skips and charity shops, but whoever I’ve looked, I’ve not found anything special. It’s a gift.

Helen1625 · 22/05/2025 17:39

He's being really cheeky - skips are really expensive now, too tight to pay for his own but doesn't mind filling yours!

Yes, I would be taking it out, putting it on his garden and to avoid any concerns over reports of fly tipping (I don't think he'd have the nerve to complain to be honest!) I'd knock on his door and tell him!

It wouldn't be so bad if he'd asked first.

Lovehascomeandgone · 22/05/2025 17:46

Personally I would take it all back out, carry it up and put it outside his house. I appreciate it’s a nuisance but it sends a message.

StartEngineStop · 22/05/2025 17:51

Newgirls · 22/05/2025 09:03

You can’t be done for fly tipping returning his stuff when you have evidence he’s uses your skip. He’s hardly going to Sue you is he.

And she has video evidence of him ‘flytipping’ first!

cacboi · 22/05/2025 17:53

If the skip is on the street, he might think it's for community use. I would put a tarp over it asap and maybe a notice on it saying PRIVATE.

Carodebalo · 22/05/2025 17:54

What you should do is go talk to him. Give him a chance to take the items back. If not I’d let your uncle help out and go to the police as well.

I have never known a skip dumped on a street for community use. It's not a normal thing to happen.

I think we did have one up in our community playing fields once a very long time ago but everyone knew about it!

If it's outside someone's house, it's a private skip for private use. Surely no one would assume otherwise

Darls3000 · 22/05/2025 18:05

Take out his items and place them on his drive. Don’t say anything just leave it there. He will take the hint.

Apparently community skips are common in some European countries. The only ones I've seen in UK are manned by the council and the rubbish is vetted as it is dumped, then the skip whisked away when full (or at 3.00pm when the council want to take it to the dump !). Unless you want to confront the dumper, I think covering the skip may be your best option. When we had building work done, the builder insisted the skip on our drive was covered at all times to prevent others filling it.

arghhelpme · 22/05/2025 18:13

Throw it in his garden. I remember leaving just enough space in my black bin to put the last bag in before collection. Opened my bin and it was filled with tins of wickes patio sealer. My next door neighbour had told me the day before about taking a neighbour who lives over the road to wickes to buy patio stuff, so I grabbed the tins and launched them into his front garden. Never had anyone put stuff in my bin since

Nikki75 · 22/05/2025 19:30

He absolutely needs telling and stopping that is beyond cheeky ..tell him he is on camera.

again...on what planet????

gardenflowergirl · 22/05/2025 19:54

Put it back on his front garden. Knock on his door and tell him you've got him on camera .

Kibble29 · 22/05/2025 19:58

Cheeky bastard.

I’d definitely cart every item back and leave it strewn on his front garden/driveway.

I actually did do something similar once. Had put a particular recycling bin out for collection and some CF from the street chucked their regular rubbish in it, thus ensuring that it wouldn’t be uplifted by the bin men.

Didn’t see them do it, but the dozy bastard left their rubbish bag open and right at the top was a letter with their name and address on it. You better believe they got that back into their front garden. Bag still untied, chucked over the gate.

People like that rely on people not standing up for themselves.

RawBloomers · 22/05/2025 21:14

I would contact the council as he’s fly tipping on your land and councils have responsibility for fly tipping, not the police. They may not do anything for you but they may and, in any case, should be able to advise on what you can do.

MoominMai · 22/05/2025 21:50

BlahBlahBittyBlah · 22/05/2025 07:53

Put it all back in his garden. If he’s cheeky enough to object, let him know how much he owes you for half the cost of the skip.

This lol. Except, to save you taking the junk out just drop a note to say you’ve run out of skip space because of the numerous items he’s dumped in there without your permission and to go retrieve it by set deadline otherwise you will similarly without his permission ‘return’ said items back to him. Can’t say fairer than that and you’re covered in case he tries to go all legal on yo ass.

You must live in a nice area. We once lived in a not so desirable area, where it was impossible to FILL a skip - people kept taking stuff out! Overnight half the contents disappeared, and occasionally you'd see someone pull up outside, have a mooch in the skip and take something. One chap did knock the door and ask.

Our business is still in that area and we're currently having building work done. Same again. DH left the old radiators outside, next morning they were gone. A folding table wouldn't be there long 😄

To be fair, radiators are worth a bit when weighed in!

Id either take the stuff back and stack it all up right in front of his door (where it will be most annoying) or put a note through his door telling him to shift his stuff out of your skip immediately before you take further action- tell him you have cctv footage.
