I can't figure out how to make this room look/feel better.

What would you do to it? Move furniture etc?

That looks great. Just to humour me, can you go for a deep bold wall colour ? The rug and leather would carry it well.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 17/05/2025 21:55

I would start by getting some more modern looking artwork. Those paintings are very old fashioned. I understand you might want to keep one or two family heirloom pieces but not a whole rooms worth.

You can mix in old art with new op. I think all new looks just as bad. It’s too “ IKEA.”

You need a bigger rug, so it sits under all the furniture, in a light neutral colour

PhaseFour · 17/05/2025 22:00

First thoughts: get a much bigger, more colourful rug; move the sofa from the window to the wall on the left. Get rid of that blind, and get some floor length, statement curtains; get a large piece of art to replace the painting of yachts. It's a beautiful room - so much potential. I'd also paint it either a beautiful green or a dark blue.

Not just yet!! Try darker walls first op!!

Chat has done dark green…can’t get it to go any lighter 😐

To me that’s transformed it! It looks like a really cosy, pulled together space now. You could contrast a bit more with the curtains to bring in some more colour; but I think that’s the look the leather sofas are crying out for.

Annascaul · 17/05/2025 22:28

Yes, it’s much better.

The contrast of the size of furniture is wrong. If you don’t want to decorate. Change the lights, bigger rug, add stuffing to the sofa and I’d add shutters to the window and clear clutter.

Looks so much nicer and cosier

Wibblywobblybobbly · 17/05/2025 22:43

Your picture above the sofa and on the opposite wall are far too small. It would look much better with a decent sized picture.

I'd move the sofa out the window if possible.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 17/05/2025 22:43

I do like it darker actually. Not sure I'd get away with all of it though...feature walls are a bit passé now aren't they? 🤔

I'd also have to work out where to stop as it is open on the corner to what is/will be the hall, boot room type space.

Could you soften the effect by changing the curtain colour - which would almost work as a different coloured wall because the window space is so large?

But don’t be too timid: I think it’s the boldness that makes it work!

FWIW I think dark looks great in a boot room. Could you extend it in?

Newgirls · 17/05/2025 22:53

Much better! I’d lose the coffee table. Don’t need it if you’ve got side tables by the sofas

Purplegiraffe345 · 18/05/2025 06:47

I really love your wall colour, is it taupe? I think it looks fresh and neutral but also warm.

I would definitely put some lovely heavy curtains on the windows (perhaps a cream colour). I would also add an accent colour with a few accessories; I have cream walls but then have used red cushions and lampshades for a little bit of colour.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 18/05/2025 07:39

Thanks! It is kind of a dark cream, called Mallord by Craig & Rose. We did it a couple of years ago after years of it being much more pale, simply because that room is south facing and so very light, it had been looking a bit stark

Snoringdogsfarting · 18/05/2025 07:47

Get rid of everything and start again. New lighter colour sofas, coffee table, lights, curtains, rug. Sofas facing one another. Easy.

Jeezitneverends · 18/05/2025 07:48

Barrenfieldoffucks · 17/05/2025 21:29

No, sorry. I was referring to my inability to hang pictures any other way that just, standard size picture, making wall look blank. This is another room in the house, with a big picture and little wall space!

Please hang them much lower down! There’s nothing wrong with having more than 1 picture per wall when they’re not large enough on their own though. The sofas facing each other is far better. Full length curtains would look good, or Roman blinds as others have suggested

Yeah, I think I need to learn how to do this better. Take them all down and start again, one furniture is in its final position.

Thanks so much I’ve had a look it does look nice! I might order a sample pot!

Wall colour is nice so no need to change :)
