I can't figure out how to make this room look/feel better.

What would you do to it? Move furniture etc?

I love chat GTP!😁

Chair in the bay not sofa to start off

Sunnywithacoolbreeze · 17/05/2025 19:55

Which way does this room face? Does it get the evening sun when presumably it is used?
I’d change the ceiling light for something big and bold, use complementary Roman blinds and have a huge colourful picture over the radiator. I like the walls but would inject colour. If you keep the sofas, feed them.

Ferretedaway · 17/05/2025 19:59

It’s a gorgeous room .

New blinds and curtains to make it look cosy. Ikea have some cheap but seriously good looking curtains.

Really big rug

if you can get a new sofa and chair great.

new lamps - both table and floor ones.

Think what sort of look you’d like first - cosy and dark, light and airy, minimalist or with more books/knicknacks around etc. Also who will be using the room, when and for what? Do you have pets that will be in there? This will influence what materials will be most appropriate .

i have just decorated and got new furniture, lighting in my flat. I went on Pinterest first to look for ideas and made a board that I put anything I liked on. Then filtered it down.

Goodgrashus · 17/05/2025 20:02

You’ve got some nice pieces. Is the picture on the wall of the two boats an original? It looks like a Vic Ellis?

minipie · 17/05/2025 20:04

Bigger rug

Bigger coffee table

Bigger (wider) ceiling pendant

Different wall colour

Sofas are perfectly fine. Couple of throws on them - like over an arm - or cushions, to break the bulk up a bit.

Curtains are £££ so I’d hold off those until you’ve tried the other bits. But in any case I’d go for lightweight linen type curtains just for show/softness and keep the blinds.

feelingbleh · 17/05/2025 20:07

I think new sofas get rid of the chair and coffee table change the rug and the lamp shade on the celing. It's a nice size room it has a lot of potential

Imnutty · 17/05/2025 20:09

Your home is lovely op not my style but its very nice very clean and not much clutter.

Im more hippy i love colour i do have the same floor as you lol but i have a funky rug down.
I have half colour tinted windows red orange blue and wall tapestys each wall and 2 in the ceiling.
My curtains are just multi coloured nets.
Chairs 2 huge funky rocking chair`s 1 recliner covered with a funky throw matching foot stool a small coffee table and a bean bag.
A neat pile of books on a small set of step ladders.
Candle and incense burning.
It sounds alot but i dont have much if the tapestys came down the place would look empty.
Its not every ones taste but i love it.
And a sunflower cushion.

Newgirls · 17/05/2025 20:11

ok one new sofa in a pale colour and the arm chair you have is ok. Giant floor cushions for the rare times you are all in there? Lose the coffee table and get a small side table by the new sofa instead

Franklet · 17/05/2025 20:20

I think the walls/floors/sofas are all fine.

The pictures are all a bit small and a bit high up on the walls, which stops them adding the character they could.

A big rug and nice curtains would really bring it together.

A bigger more interesting pendant lamp would help too (not to to actually use! Just for the look!).

I'd start there before making any bigger/more expensive changes.

Don't hang the TV on the wall!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 17/05/2025 20:33

Ok, my thoughts so far.

  • Love ChatGtp, that could be my new evening pastime. I put a photo in and will attach what it came back with 😁
  • Have moved sofas. May well look into changing these out at some point.
  • Still on the lookout for a big rug.
  • Ditto a large ottoman/footstool. All the ones I like are mega bucks, so I'm waiting on the local antiques auction on Tues which has one I can recover if I win
  • Current long stool thing under the window perhaps.
  • More pictures, rethink height. I suck at doing anything more than one picture, in the middle of a wall. But then unless it is massive, the wall then looks bare! We do have more pictures (some stacked), but will go through them.
  • Ditch lamp to the left, in place of a side table with a table lamp
  • Bigger lamp shade on Bobbin lamp (Dunelm BTW, comes in natural wood to stain or paint)
  • Bigger ceiling lampshade, brighter.

The painting is W. F. Burton, belonged to my late Granny. Between her and my late MiL they had quite the penchant for furniture, art, antique odds and sods.

This is in the newer, back bit of the house...complete contrast in size of art! 😂

The contrast of the size of furniture is wrong. If you don’t want to decorate. Change the lights, bigger rug, add stuffing to the sofa and I’d add shutters to the window and clear clutter.

Sunshine1500 · 17/05/2025 20:46

And also move the sofa away from the window

Pigglingbland · 17/05/2025 21:01

I’d change the rug to a lighter & more colour to pop. Change the central pendant light shade to something fresher & more fashionable.
Change the shade on the bobbin lamp base.
And the other floor standing lamp
Swap some of the gilt framed pictures to some thing with more colour
Wooden blinds feel dated - off white instead?
Lovely room tho - only tweaks needed imo
Colour pop with cushions too.

BellissimoGecko · 17/05/2025 21:06

That makes a huge difference moving the sofa from the window! That was what I was going to suggest.

Neveranynamesleft · 17/05/2025 21:13

In the nicest possible way it looks dated and drab. Take out everything, all the clutter, from the room. Paint the walls a shade of white to brighten the room up, get some modern colourful curtains and cushions and add a few pictures and bits and bobs back to match, nice throws on the sofas, couple of plants. Tall lamps really not necessary. Remember though, less is more.

tillyandmilly · 17/05/2025 21:19

Large natural rug - jute hessian? Sorry settee throws all the lounge out! Get neutral linen settee and chair - keep walls same floor same

stample · 17/05/2025 21:23

Tv in front of window and sofas on opposite wall. ditch table in middle and possibly the chair. Different rug maybe
matching lamp shades

Is this the same room. Confused!

Calliopespa · 17/05/2025 21:27

I think one of the issues is you have two different “looks” going on.

One is dark leathery sofas for a kind of clubby ensconcing look; the other is light and airy. It ends up being neither one nor the other.

If the sofas are good quality, I’d save money on replacements and put it into a repaint. I’d lean into the clubby/ study look and go for a deep navy or charcoal on the walls and lots of layered lighting.

I quite like a desk in a window.

Mulledjuice · 17/05/2025 21:26

Is this the same room. Confused!

No, sorry. I was referring to my inability to hang pictures any other way that just, standard size picture, making wall look blank. This is another room in the house, with a big picture and little wall space!

OP posts:
Calliopespa · 17/05/2025 21:35

I think unless they are statement pieces in and of themselves, pictures look better grouped on a wall. Otherwise it looks like a token “ plonked” picture . One for this wall… one for that wall etc. Grouping makes it feel like a collection of things you have loved. And if you don’t love a picture, get rid of it.

Kdubs1981 · 17/05/2025 21:47

Definitely curtains. Full length, statement pattern or colour. Bigger rug with more impact colour/pattern. Some big plants!
