We’re buying a 1930’s detached and chat gpt is giving me so many ideas for renovation.
I just need to win the lottery now to fund it all 😆
how have I been sleeping on this !

Are you just using standard chatgpt? I tried the other day and it just spat out code, I asked it for a visual and I didn't get anything, prompted it a few times but it just kept saying '5 more mins'.

wisteriadrive · 15/05/2025 07:39

Yes just the standard one. How strange maybe uninstall and try again ?

It is a great tool, but just be aware it has a huge environmental impact. I’m not saying don’t use it, just we should be mindful how we do.

I had a thread about it last week! I bit the bullet and paid for it and it’s incredible. I do have a niggle about the environmental impact, I can’t lie, but it’s an amazing tool that’s done all sorts of stuff for me and given me stacks of ideas

MH0084 · 15/05/2025 08:25

I love chat GPT!
I use it a lot (I know I know it’s bad for the environment…)
It’s not very good at generating floor plans. But its great to generate visuals and show how an specific paint colour would look in different light conditions. I just wish they manage the water impact so I could use it more!

Just told my dh that’s its bad for the environment but he doesn’t get it, how can I explain it simply ?!

Its servers uses electricity, which is not good.

"Professor Gina Neff of Queen Mary University London tells the BBC that ChatGPT is "burning through energy", and the data centres used to power it consume more electricity in a year than 117 countries."

Just how people don't think about the environmental impact of sending thousands of emails a year - they also require servers to send and back them up, and that's having an environmental impact too.

But ChatGPT is using far more. And most people are using it for fun. Not that I'm against fun, but I don't think people realise the consequences of casual use of it.

On the left, a picture of Zoe. She is smiling. She has shoulder-length blonde hair, a blue jacket and a silver necklace. On the right, an image generated using ChatGPT of a doll-like version of her. The doll has the same clothes and necklace - but has...

It uses lots of power. Which is not great for the environment until we have 100% green energy solutions.

I have concerns that everyone is slowly losing their ability to think for themselves, or use their imaginations, the environment is of course another.

Isn't using our brains something we need to do regularly to ward off dementia?

The (western) world is getting lazy and the future looks scary!

I am in a similar position and so far it has helped loads with the house purchase questions I've had. What did you type in to help with renovation ideas? Or did you upload pics? I'd love to use it for this!

This. My children aren't at the stage of needing to do homework and study for exams yet but it already feels like the children who don't use ChatGPT to do their thinking for them will be at an academic disadvantage and within a generation all our school leavers will be unable to learn or think for themselves. I'm worried we're going to see a mass dumbing down, just when we need more smart people to think of creative solutions to modern challenges like climate change.

Styleseeker65 · 15/05/2025 10:27

ChatGPT does some bits of my job for me, or at least reduces massively the time I need to spend comparing docs etc.

wisteriadrive · 15/05/2025 11:33

@TwoleggedhorseA bit of both actually, so I will for example ask it to design a typical 1930s living room for me, then it will bullet point all different ideas and then ask if I’d like a visual. Or I can upload my own photos and ask it to create a colour scheme, or add panelling etc
It isn’t taking away my own imagination but rather giving me a starting to point to go off !

@wisteriadrive This sounds so helpful! There's so many things to consider when renovating a whole house. I am excited to give it a try!

JohnSmithDeveloper · 19/05/2025 18:14

@wisteriadrive I completely agree; ChatGPT is seriously a game changer! I’ve even used it for academic stuff, like understanding how grading systems work and building small tools.
I recently created a little calculator with the help of ChatGPT that predicts final grades based on inputs super simple but helpful for students or parents.
You can try it here: Ez Grade Calculator happy to get any feedback

Also uses a lot of water for cooling down processes.
