Trade Prices up 20%??

Jeevesnotwooster · 14/05/2025 10:21

Just followed up on a quote I got for a conservatory repair late last year and been told all prices have gone up 20%!

That's way above inflation! Is that normal still? I knew trades prices were going up a lot over the last couple of years but thought they may have slowed down.

With the increase in minimum wage and NI it has impacted both installation and raw material costs.

Feelingstrange2 · 14/05/2025 12:18

Possibly. Wages and NI and materials specifically have their own inflation rate and perhaps that's 20 percent.

The price of bread and carrots which is built into the main level of inflation has no impact whatsoever on a conservatory quote.

Well aside from the fact that people who build/repair conservatories need to eat.

But maybe they survive on beer and chips.

Their food bill doesn't impact the quote - the rate at which their wage bill rises (which allows them to eat) will.

I get the NI and wage and even material cost increases. By my public sector salary is only going to go up by 2% this year. So it's making it all much more relatively expensive. Even my DP who runs his own business can only get away with increasing prices by inflation.

The work is going to have to get done but something else will have to be sacrificed.

Have you had alternate quotations?

Feelingstrange2 · 14/05/2025 13:48

Get a few more quotes to test if it's just a company that are expensive or perhaps don't want repair work.
