Design for coat cupboard? Help please!

We have built a large coat cupboard when doing an extension, but do not feel the space is currently being used effectively.

The cupboard needs to store adult coats (child’s in own cupboard), bags, hats/gloves etc, motorbike equip like helmet..

There is also a mess of parcels that we shove in there out of sight. I would love to say I will cut back on ordering so much, but realistically a system to store them better is the way forward!

The shelf at the top is very high for me to use and is a dumping ground really. We had a double rail for coats in our old house so thinking this could work? With some kind of storage boxes?

help!!!! Open to any ideas please. Photo uploaded (please do not judge the mess 🙈) the rails are usually full, but some coats were moved to make space for guests for a party last week….

dimensions are 145cm wide by 175 length. Door is approx 82cm. Height of room approx 230cm (maybe a bit more)

Labelled storage boxes would be helpful:

  1. to keep seasonal things, e.g. gloves, hates, scarves out of the way.
  2. To store the bags that are currently on the shelves

Could you add a bench/shoe rack/ small set of shelves on the floor, under the coats to store parcels if you have to?

What is on the left side at the moment?

It's a case of giving each thing that goes in there a home.

I think some square pigeon hole shelves on the right hand side would be useful, the sort you can fit those square IKEA boxes in. It would give you somewhere to shove parcels and motorbike helmets and as like pp says you could have one for gloves, hats , scarves etc. also racking for shoes at the bottom would make it look a lot tidier.

Fab ideas thank you.

Youre spot on that currently nothing has a ‘home’. Love the idea of boxes aka kallax style to the right with clear labels.

at the moment on the right a couple of small hooks with bags on but not very good use of space (just two or three bags).

whilst our shoes our in a different cupboard, a shoe shelf / box / system under the coats to use for parcels makes sense. Thank you!!

You need labelled drawers for hats, gloves etc… Drawers always look neater than boxes. You can put parcels on top of them too. Labelled boxes above for things you don’t need very often. Use the same boxes in various sizes, rather than lots of different ones as they’ll stack well. Hooks on the back of the door for bags. Using the same hangers for everything will make it look a lot tidier too, as will hanging the clothes so that they face in the same direction. The flock hangers are great. My friend does all of this; she is so organised and her cupboards all look great.

@sweetsardineface im excitedly looking at Ikea box options. Streamlining and consistency (and labels) sounds heavenly.
