Does anyone know what this could be ? It’s strong enough to lift the frame from the floor and tilt to the side…

Not bamboo. Either a very old Clematis or Wisteria. Both have beautiful, fragrant flowers.

Thwart · 09/05/2025 19:41

Definitely not any type of bamboo.

were these pictures taken recently? It could be wisteria but around here that’s all in full flower right now.

I agree with this. Maybe post a photo of the leaves, that'd be be helpful.

NeverOneBiscuit · 09/05/2025 19:46

My first thought was an old wisteria.

goody2shooz · 09/05/2025 19:50

All the stuff at the top makes me think it’s an old honeysuckle. Having said that, here in the sw ours is all green atm.
Its definitely not bamboo.

Agree - our neighbors had one that had been climbing up their house for years.
we helped take it down as it was starting to pull the guttering from roof down.

LavenderBlue19 · 09/05/2025 20:16

Has it been very severely cut back fairly recently? Whatever it is, it should be flowering at the moment or getting ready to.

My guess would be wisteria but if it's very old it could be a clematis. Can we see the leaves?

Whataretalkingabout · 09/05/2025 20:51

I suggest a combination of wisteria, climbing rose and clematis. I inherited a gazebo and arch covered walkway from a previous home and it looked very similar. It needed quite a bit of pruning to remove all the dieback.

B0D · 09/05/2025 21:02

I vote clematis rather than wisteria. Wisteria more long shoots and clematis more tangly uppy in my experience

Whataretalkingabout · 09/05/2025 21:30

I have seen wisteria wind itself tightly around and bend iron rods . It can also be braided into tight knots that thicken with age....

butterfly0404 · 09/05/2025 21:32

Wisteria I think, would be in flower by now though. Definitely not bamboo.

GoodVibesHere · 09/05/2025 21:34

Looks like a somewhat dead wisteria

TequilaNights · 09/05/2025 21:35

Looks like a wisteria to me, cut back after flowering and leave it until next year for good flowers

FunPinkSwan · 10/05/2025 23:21

Thank you everyone. Unfortunately I don’t have any other pics at the moment to go off by but believe they are fairly recent.

you’ve all been a great help., thanks again

It’s a clematis I think. We had one in a similar state which had to be cut down as it was pulling the pergola over.

Moier · 11/05/2025 22:15

Old Wisteria. Should be flowering about now.. but it's dead wood
Not sure if it can be brought back to life.
