Roofer Scam

I had some work done on my mother's roof last autumn by an independent tradesman. I paid him cash and the work seemed fine. He called at my own door out of the blue today, telling me he had to 'inspect' the work he'd done as this was a requirement of his trade (doubt that) and could he check it. I thought nothing of it (was a bit distracted as I had a workman of my own in today) and told him to go ahead. He then phoned me to try to get more money, said tiles had slipped etc. It may well have been the case but the house is up for sale and sale is going through in a few weeks, no longer my problem. I said I wasn't interested. He then tried to charge me a £150 'inspection fee'! This was never mentioned at the door, never mind the cost. He has been phoning ever since and has threatened to come back to my house - I'm here on my own and have no-one to call on to back me up. Can anyone advise me what to do or to say to him or threaten him with to get him to eff off.

OP, tell him you’re not going to pay for an “inspection” that you didn’t ask to have done, and that if he continues to harass you, you will call the police. Usually, threats of the law put these chancers off because they know that what they are doing is not strictly legal.

Thanks, he hasn't called or phoned back (yet) but it has unsettled me, his tactics were very aggressive and definitely scammy, no work should go ahead without a price being agreed, that's pretty much universally understood. I do wish I had a man here built like a brick outhouse though - they tend to target women on their own, or the elderly.
