Video doorbells like Blink and Ring

We are soon to move into a bungalow because we have both become seriously disabled. It’s a rather sprawling building with some rooms quite a long way from the front door. So we are concerned that we won’t always make it to the door in time!

I seen video doorbells mentioned but don’t know anything about them or whether they would be suitable for us. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me an overview or point me in the right direction. Are these worth buying and which would be best for us? I am reasonably able to use computers (have a laptop, iPad and mobile), DH is not so would have to be persuaded to use his mobile!

TIA

I have a blink. I like it, can talk through it using the app on my phone e

They are good but most useful when used in conjunction with the mobile app. In your case, it would give you the opportunity to speak to the caller and tell them you are on your way to the door. Just be aware though that you need a strong wifi connection or there can be a delay in getting the notification. For Ring (and I expect others) you can buy a 'Chime' that you plug in and makes a typical doorbell sound. It saves you having to listen out on your phone, but you may not hear it at the other end of the house. Some of these devices have paid subscriptions, others are free so it's important to research before you buy to ensure the product meets your needs.

I have one as I work from home upstairs so can't make it down the stairs in time to answer the door. I find it really useful. You can set it up so that an alert goes on your phone and via the app on your phone you can see who is outside and talk to them. I do this with deliveries and ask them to put parcels in my safe place or leave on the doorstep if I am coming to the door shortly.
It's also good for security as you can get it to record anyone that comes to the door or any movement in a set area. I found it very reassuring after a neighbour had an attempted break in. If I heard a noise outside at night or if the camera detects something and send me an alert I can quickly check on my phone and see what's happening.

Also, I don't find it difficult to use at all, and setting it up wasn't too difficult

I have a eufy. It is wired into the old doorbell's wiring, so I get an old fashioned ding dong, but also an alert on my phone. It is not cloud based so no subscription. Videos are stored on its' own little server which can also chime. It has good night visions, customisable zones and you can have a two way conversation with someone at the front door. You don't need to be in the house, I've answered the doorbell and spoken to the postie when I was overseas.

I love my ring doorbell. I can see who is at the door and screen all the chuggers, time wasters, broadband salesmen etc without even opening the door.

I have a Eufy too (you can buy via Amazon). I like it for the reasons @unsync says - no subscription, easy to use, don’t even have to be in.

Mine is not wired in, and I remove it to charge it about every 3 months.

Crouton19 · 03/04/2025 21:17

We have eufy and it's very good but did need to get it wired in as the camera was triggered so often the battery ran down very quickly.

I’m not very mobile and I now live alone, so I have bought a Blink system. Doorbell, Outside and two indoor cameras, plus a Sync module. It was on offer on Amazon last year for less than half price.

I have found it to be very helpful for deliveries and general reassurance, being on my own.

You don’t need a subscription, just a usb stick in the sync module.

The app lets me talk to people at the door and let them know that I am slowly getting to the door.

I would really recommend getting one. You can start with one camera and add to your system as you choose.

Following this thread as I'm interested in the recommendations (prefer a non-subscription type) for when my house purchase completes.

Thank you all so much for your helpful replies. I am not well today, so will take some time to go through them as soon as I can.
