I need to buy new bedroom carpet but have never bought carpet before so not sure what I like need. I like the look of sisal but is that uncomfortable to walk on? I also have a cat so not sure it's practical. Are the only colours beige or grey?

I love the way sisal looks and that it’s natural materials – but yeah, I do think my cat would assume I’d kindly turned the entire floor into a scratching post.

Twist pile is good because there’s nothing for cats to hook their claws on (so they have to settle for the odd hair ball when they want to annoy you.)

If you’re just doing one room, I can recommend looking at the remnants section of Designer Carpets, as you can find some really lovely quality pieces of carpet at a discount (but you need to sort out your own fitter, unlike Tapi etc). Once you see how many colours there are you’ll probably wish there was only grey or beige!

Don't buy sisal if you've got a cat and it's difficult to keep clean.

In a bedroom you can go for a plush carpet, perhaps 80/20 wool. I agree with off cuts. Carpet Warehouse do some bargains, especially during sales.

I don't have a view on materials, but I would recommend using your local carpet shop rather than a big chain. Often the local places look quite unassuming, but are often run by people who have been in the trade donkeys years and know their onions. We've had excellent service from them over the years and nothing has been too much trouble.

If you do that make sure you pay the deposit on a credit card. Actually same goes for the big chains too of course!

just speaking from recent experience.

I don't really want wool due to moths.

@User155 this came up when I searched and I liked the look. Would the loops be ok with a cat? Tbf she doesn't really scratch the current carpet or rugs.

Thanks for tip re deposit on cc.

I will probably do all 3 bedrooms in the same carpet.

I am having it fitted in two weeks - and I have a cat - so I will let you know!

I really wanted sisal but my carpet fitter said it was terrible and doesn’t last, and that this was the closest alternative that will last for years and years.

@User155 amazing, I look forward to a review!

I've ordered some samples, what colour did you go for?

River cane

Sisal will be a nightmare in a few years, its hard to keep clean as the dust can settle into the weave (and unlike carpet pile will not be moved by the hoover to release these particles) and its essentially an organic material that will break down over time and start causing its own dust, you also cant have it cleaned in the same way as carpet so stains will be stuck there

I second the local carpet shop recommendation, especially as the fitting quality is often to a much higher standard than big stores, ask around locally with friends/family for recommendations
