Cold feet about building work

Is this a thing? We are reconfiguring some internal rooms and I have cold feet about it. It’s been in the planning for ages and I know it’s a better use of space (moving an oddly located downstairs bathroom and making a kitchen diner) but I’m worried that we are doing the wrong thing. I also wonder if we should extend instead but I think this is partly influenced by everyone else seemingly doing this and I actually think we have enough space. Also, if we did extend we’d need to wait to save up money (probably a good few years) as my DP does not want to borrow more from the bank.
I’m not sure why I’m posting - probably for reassurance!

We did internal work which involved making our 4 bed house a 3 bed as the bedrooms were quite small. Also meant moving a bathroom. I wasn’t sure if it was the best thing to do but it’s been amazing. Transformed our kids bedrooms and the flow of upstairs. If it will work for you & your family it won’t be a mistake.

Thank you for replying! Great to hear. I’m sure we are doing the right thing but then I panic that it’s all so expensive so if it’s not, we’ve just wasted money and will have to live with it!

Go for it. We also considered extending but I’m glad we didn’t. We’ve achieved what we wanted with much less expense and fuss. If you’re not planning to move then it has to be right for you. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. You don’t want to put yourself under financial pressure if you don’t need to.

Thank you! I need to keep telling myself this!

I’m in a similar dilemma. Have been yo-yoing between reconfiguring walls or a 1m extension for a year. My architect has given up on me! I’d love to canvas opinion about both options if I may. I think they may cost the same as we’re reflooring/reroofing the room anyway.

The box frame original layout flows better. I don't like the other one, it makes the snug a corridor.

The box frame layout means we have to plumb the utility room by the party wall (currently it’s on the outside wall and has a window), and means moving the hall door to the side so the view of the garden as you enter the house is slightly obscured. But I agree it gives a better kitchen space and the snug is a bit of a coffee (though useful for snooker!!). Currently, the house is the 1m extension plan but without the extension and with the utility room closer to the garden (ir the kitchen is squeezed a bit)

There's a tweak to the box frame layout which means not moving the hall door or the utility room as far (the current kitchen is essentially the 1m extension plan but with the utility room 60cm closer to the garden and without the extension, so less room for a kitchen).
