How many weeks a year for holiday home?

What do you think the minimum amount of time someone should spend somewhere/want to spend somewhere before buying a holiday home?

Friends of ours have had a place for 25 years and in the early days they would spend as little as around 2-3 weeks a year there. They would rent it out for about 15 weeks a year and have family there for another 2 weeks or so.

It worked very well for them but read another thread on here with interest and people were claiming anything less than 8 weeks is a waste. What jobs that afford a holiday home allow forthat?

Depends on the holiday home really.

Some people go most weekends. Easy if you are only an hour's drive away.
Some people buy (or keep property they inherited) for the whole family to use.
Some have it as somewhere to let out.

Things like the cost of upkeep / maintenance will vary hugely.
Some will be looking at owning a property for a long term investment, and using it is a much smaller part of their plan.

Horses for courses.
