Unprotected deposit - how best to leave rental

We've been in our rental for 17 years and are in the final stages of a house purchase that we hope to complete before end March. I was hoping we would have a completion date by now and would be able to give notice on our upcoming rent day but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now. I really don't want to have to pay two more months rent and then go to court to get the deposit back. I want to just say to landlady on next rent day that we have found somewhere else to live, will be gone within the next two months and won't be paying any more rent due to unprotected deposit. Is this a really bad idea?

If this makes any difference, I'm certain landlady has lost her copy of the rental agreement as she recently tried to do six-monthly rent rises by sending me a new rental agreement which had the wrong deposit amount and wrong date.

The house we are buying is an empty ex-council property previously bought under right to buy with probate now granted so I'm not anticipating much more of a delay.

Do you have to give rent day notice?

My son's in your position and his is one months notice from any day at all.

Maybe it's because of your very old tenancy as his is much newer than yours.

Are you sure deposits had to be protected 17 years ago?

@Feelingstrange2 Ah I will check the agreement, it might be something I have presumed based on even older tenancies!
@LIZS Since April 2007 apparently though not something I was aware of until recently!
