Help! Hallway Victorian Tile Redecoration Ideas Needed!

I am looking for some ideas and help with redecorating my hallway!

We bought our forever home 8 months ago and it came with an original victorian tiled hallway. It is beautiful! Currently the entire hallway is white, very bland.

I want to create a hallway that has the wow factor! The ceilings are quite high, but it can be a bit dark in areas so I need to take that into consideration too.

I am thinking paint doors/skirting/door trims/ radiator all black with soft white walls. At the same time I want some colour. Maybe a sage green or blue?

Any ideas would be so welcome, I really want to just decide and start decorating 😁

I had a quick look on Pinterest, mainly houses with those tiles seem to go for panelling and a dado, some painted black, lots still with white walls.
There was one account from Instagram called casaoldcorn, with coloured panelling and floral wallpaper above, which may or may not be your thing, take a look.

I would either put a dado rail and or a picture rail back in or at the very least paint the bottom half of the walls darker than the top half with a very lovely precise line about 1/3 rd of the way up. What sort of colours do you like? Cool tones or warm autumnal ones?

Isseywith2witchycats · 24/02/2025 17:36

I would paint the walls a pale sage green and put in a dado rail about 1/3 of the way up the walls and get some colourful art on the walls

It’s a shame you don’t have any stained glass in your front door, because that could have given you some inspiration. Definitely get a dado put in and get your favourite dark colour on it, and under it look at F&B Instagram for some ideas, then I would pick a wallpaper to go above dado, but I love William Morris designs.
if you like the black you might like https://www.wmorrisandco.com/uk/blackthorn-wallpaper-autumn-44000-216962/?
I’d get rails in first, find wallpaper that fills your heart with joy and then match paint to an element of wallpaper.

Put in a dado and then use Anaglypta on the bottom half. You can paint it any colour but please not black!

LadyCJD · 24/02/2025 18:13

I am loving the dado rail idea and having different colours for the bottom and top.

I am really feeling a sage green or dusky kind of blue.

I think I have been talked out of black 😂 I do feel this is a good decision, the hallway can be quite dark at times.

I will check out some wallpapers too!

Thank you everyone, I didn't think a dado rail which will give me so many options to choose from x

Oooh those tiles are gorgeous .

TBH , if it was mine I wouldn't change the colours , Maybe a fresh coat of white

Pictures?

I am surprised at the dado/picture rail suggestions , any other threads I;ve read have said they;re a tad naff.
I hide that from my own house which is 1930s and has both (original in house )
Edit - I love our dado/picture rails , wouldn't remove them

KnickerlessParsons · 24/02/2025 18:14

I'd paint the whole thing black, or at least most of it, and put some lovely lights in there.

Belindabelle · 24/02/2025 19:34

I would also get a radiator cover then hang a large mirror above it. Get a battery light, treat the shelf like a console table maybe a nice plant or two. Definitely some pictures or photographs. Consider a gallery wall.

Ezzee · 24/02/2025 19:41

Either change the radiator or get a cover, I wouldn't lighten I'd darken the hallway, a dark green or teal. Big glass chandelier type light and then an eclectic range of art ( colourful and B/W, different textures etc ) soft lighting lamps and wall hung lighting.
Warm and snug.

I love those tiles, they are gorgeous.

I would look to change the front door, to something more in keeping with the age of the house (perhaps including the stained glass @ladycrumb mentioned) and add an inner door so the house doesn't get cold in the winter when the front door is opened. This could be 50% glass to allow light in.

I’ve been thinking about this (invested) and I think you’re on to something. As long as you go for the rails/anaglypta option, ‘colour drenching’ is the term I think but works best with architectural features and v. Good quality paint. Oh and a beautiful light fitting.

please update!

How about sage green for the bottom and ceiling and woodwork and a really bold big print floral wallpaper for the top half from a dado up to a picture rail?
You can glue dado and picture rail on with no more nails but you will need to get back to plaster first or it will just pull the paint off. Or you can screw it into the wall with Rawl plugs.
