High level cistern pull chain

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place

We have a traditional style toilet in the main bathroom with a high level cistern and it has a pull chain. The pull chain swings and bashes the wall and after years of this happening consistently, the plaster is dented.

I haver thought about filling and repainting it but the problem will just keep returning. I have searched high and low for something to put behind it that looks in keeping with the traditional style.

Does nobody else have this issue?!

My friend has one and has simply put a silicone or foam handle cover over it.

I visited an old house that had the pull on a rod instead of a chain. I think there was a short bit of chain connecting the rod tothe lever at the cistern. To stop it swinging, the rod passed through a couple of rings attached to the wall.

Google high cistern rod pull.
