Safety strip for indoor step

The house we are in the process of buying has a safety issue that I noticed when we last visited. There is a long rectangular kitchen/dining area with a grey tiled floor. At the end of the run of cupboards there is a very shallow step down. DH is disabled and walks with a stick and I am concerned that either he, or indeed me, might catch his shoes on the edge and fall. It would be impossible to remove the step, so I am asking if anyone has any ideas as to how we might resolve this. Some kind of bright edging, perhaps?

Apologies in advance if I don’t reply straight away. I am also disabled and am having to organise everything with the move on my own! TIA

If it is a shallow step, could it ne changed to a slight incline?

Can you put a handrail on one side to give him extra support using it? Definitely bright strip on the step. And is the floor cushioned the other side with carpet, to help if he did fall?

How often will he need to use it? Does it lead to the rest of the house or only one room that’s not heavily used?

If it’s going to make you anxious and increase his risks of falls, is it worth rethinking the house? Safety and accessibility is so high up on priorities in a house I think, although totally understand if you’re limited on choices etc.

Thank you for your replies, they have given us some things to think about. I think a coloured strip is the way to go. I hope that we don’t lose our sight!

Look at screwfix's website, if they don't a proper health and safety company, we have it on steps at work

The colourful edge strips aren't that expensive and you just cut and stick them on, I got it from eBay.

Thank you all again for your help. I have added edge strips to my very long list!
