Not sure whether this is unreasonable

We have a house at a gorgeous beach where we used to live for some years until DH had health issues, and we needed to be closer to a hospital. We put a tenant in for 4 years(with an agent) until we could decide whether to go back there or stay in town. There is a big room downstairs used as a bedroom, rumpus, whatever. I had painted it green, and put a big Roman mosaic mural up as a "headboard" (don't judge me - it was gorgeous IMO...so many people raved over it). The agent asked if the tenant could paint the room a slightly lighter green, to which I agreed. Trouble is, they ripped the mural down and painted the walls a colour that was pretty similar to the original. The tenant has now moved out and we've decided to move back, but am so disappointed about my lost mural. Should I ask that they replace it, or should I just accept that it wasn't to everyone's taste? They've also taken the curtains of the big stacker doors and from another room.

Sounds like a slight miscommunication over what you were allowing them to repaint maybe.

They can't just take your curtains though.

Depending on how it was worded to them, they may have assumed they had your permission to paint over it especially if you didn't specify that particular wall was to be left untouched. I would ask for them to return your curtains though, it wasn't theirs to take. Think most you could do is deduct the amount to replace the curtains from their deposit though.

How can you rip down a mural, it's painted on. You said they could repaint and they have done. How were they to know you meant paid three walls only?

It was one of those stick-on murals. It could be that they painted over it, but it is possible simply to tear it down, and more likely, as there's no lumps and bumps.

I think that if I had permission to repaint a room, I would assume any stick on murals were included in what I could redo I'm afraid.

The mural is a pity but could easily be misunderstanding.
Stealing your curtains isn't ok though.
I'd object and want to keep the deposit to go towards replacement.

I don’t understand how they could replace the mural? Wouldn’t they have binned it ages ago?

Were the curtains on an inventory that they signed when they moved in?

If not, you'd have a hard job proving they were yours.
