Building a porch

Viewing a house at the weekend which would be perfect for us but has the big draw back that it opens directly into the living room, no hall or porch.

I'm wondering if anyone has similar and managed to build an enclosed porch and what the costs might be? Or maybe made a hall area in the living room?

The house has a great garden and offers the space we need on our small budget so keen to find a way to make it work.

Are there other similar houses nearby? Have they built a porch?

Difficult to offer internal suggestions without an idea of size/layout with stairs etc. Have a look on Houzz, I've definitely seen a hall created.

There are porches and porches.
A simple glass box with flat roof or a large brick structure with heating, power & lighting, room for coats & shoes etc.

It wouldn't look odd to extend the bay across and create a porch but it would be small. We have a porch which is 1m deep x 2m wide and it can be a bit of a squeeze as the usable space is 1m sq between the two doors, but it does help with drafts. We do have a door curtain on the inside door as the porch doesn't have any insulation (not built by us)

Do you have a back door? I might be inclined to put a porch or extra room off the back, and use that as the main family entrance. We always used to go in and out the kitchen - front door was for deliveries and posh visitors (we didn't have any posh visitors!)

Could you add a wall and create a hall? Remove the wall in from od the stairs. Add doors on the new wall, or enter the sitting room via the dining room, as you prefer.

Just saw this on Facebook and could be a potential easy solution. Using ikea kallax units or the like to create a low profile storage based division between the door and living room to guide people along a route.

Thanks for the suggestions, did think about adding a stud wall but the living room isn’t that big and we have a lot of coats, wellies kid stuff. Will have to check out the back door to see if we could build a cupboard somewhere when we visit

As someone else said, have a look along the road and see if other houses have a similar porch. It sets a precedent. In some areas, I think a front extension would require planning, but easier to approve if others nearby already have the same.

I realise not your question, and may not be in your budget, but depending on your families size, could you fit a 2nd toilet in? Either under stairs or if you did a back porch area? In a different property, we were looking at adding a back door porch. We ended up expanding it slightly and adding in a tiny cloakroom behind a sliding door.

Could you have a cupboard on wall that you face when entering through front door? To the left of the door to the dining room
