If you love a bit of modernism

www.themodernhouse.com/sales-list/farnley-hey-ii/?

This is for sale near me. The DC wouldn't even need to change schools. I think it's gorgeous. Sadly, I don't have a spare £1.2M. My existing house would barely be a deposit!

It has too much of a 70s vibe - mid-century modern was from the mid-forties to the mid-seventies. So you're right, and also wrong to exclude the 70s.

What would I know lol - I just happen to remember the 70s!

Remotemouse · 22/01/2025 08:14

I love it - I'd want the furniture too.

SecretSoul · 22/01/2025 09:37

The kitchen is just tiddly and disappointing for such a large house.

The bedrooms aren’t well-proportioned and “The Dancefloor” just seems out of place and deliberately pretentious 🤷‍♀️

But I love the large windows, open plan design, light, and the way it flows.

There are elements that are breathtaking but I reckon I could find something much nicer for my fictional £1.2 mill.

Big kitchens became a thing in the 90s, before that they were just for food preparation, not a social area. It's a perfectly normal-sized kitchen for the time.

SereneCapybara · 22/01/2025 10:20

I adore it. It is utterly beautiful. But I couldn't live in it because all my books and paintings would clutter it up and to work, it needs to have those clean, unbroken lines. I just want to know people who live there, so we can be invited for martinis and pretend we are at Dick's Manhattan apartment in Mad Men.

Eddielizzard · 22/01/2025 10:21

I absolutely lOVE this house. I would buy it if I could transport it to within commuting range of work

devongirl12 · 22/01/2025 10:26

15 years ago I would have said I hated it.

Now I love it.

It's so classy, and tranquil. Love everything about it

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/01/2025 10:31

This house is perfection - reminds me of the Eames house but with a muted 70s palate suitable for a northern UK setting in the 70s.

As for the kitchen, that is authentic to the time. I notice they only show one bathroom so I am interested to know if they have kept the original fixtures in the other one and the downstairs loo.

Remotemouse · 22/01/2025 10:50

Kitchen is perfect - as are the grounds - love the topiary.

TheDandyLion · 22/01/2025 11:11

Lovely, I'd have to put some more colour into it though. It would feel very dark in the grey weather.

BadgersGalore · 22/01/2025 11:19

I absolutely love it. I would want to buy it with all the furniture.

Mid century modern is my favourite era of architecture, it just appeals to something deep inside me.

Pelot · 22/01/2025 11:23

It's really overpriced for that area even with the architects name on it...

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 22/01/2025 11:27

Oh I love it, thank you for sharing. I love how all the furnishings fit the period too, although I would want a more comfy sofa.

ethelredonagoodday · 22/01/2025 11:36

That is an amazing house! Love it.

SecretSoul · 22/01/2025 15:25

I think I was just assessing the house in terms of practicality rather than appreciating the style being of a certain era.

The kitchen would make it a non-starter for me so I guess I must not like houses from this period 🤷‍♀️

PontiacFirebird · 22/01/2025 15:40

I love it. I really love the kitchen. I’m wondering though, where would the person in the third bedroom on the first floor go for a wee?
So, I would make the third bedroom the study and the current study the snug, next to the dance floor. So, the chill out room (showing 90s roots).
I would wear floor length Ozzy Clark dresses and have regular parties.

BaronessBomburst · 22/01/2025 15:43

There's too much brown for my taste but I quite fancy joining the commune. I can bring DGM's Meakin, and Spode dinner service as my contribution. It's a bit mix and match but all the same colour blue more or less .

HippyKayYay · 22/01/2025 15:47

Love it. But then I used to live in a modernist house that we bought (and sold) through The Modern House. I loved it, although the amount of wood panelling (similar to this house) could be a bit much at times.

The modernists knew how to design living spaces to be lived in

SnowyintheATL · 22/01/2025 16:41

I love it. Mid century modern homes are one of my favorite types of architecture. However the kitchen seems tiny for so much house. But otherwise it's gorgeous.

ElderLemon · 22/01/2025 16:43

So beautiful, I would love it.

Ohshutupcolinyoutwat · 22/01/2025 17:05

I love it too. I live in a mid century dormer bungalow but not on this scale!

MissyGirlie · 22/01/2025 17:14

I do quite like it, esp location.

But:
Kitchen might have been okay at the time, when they were places of internal exile, but the size would drive me bonkers now.
What on EARTH does it cost to heat?
A flat roof? Doesn't it rain lots in the UK?

HEC2746 · 22/01/2025 17:15

Anyone else getting the vibe of Cameron’s house from Ferris Bueller…?

Ohhhh, a mid-C bungalow would be DELICIOUS. Much envy.
