Removing lead paning on front door - possible?

I have a UPVC front door which is ugly. I plan on painting it, but was also thinking about removing the lead paning.

A quick Google tells me it's possible; has anyone tried doing this and was it successful??

Can you not just sandwich it between two layers of mdf or ply?

I want to remove just the lead and keep the glass.

Oh I see. The beading surround might be removable to release the panel.
