Tips for unmarried ex-partner buying out of house

Hi all,

Really appreciate the help in advance as this is a very tricky time. I know there are lots of posts about this, but rather than reading through each one to get different bits of information, I would really appreciate any advice from those who have been through it please. Thank you so much.

Bit of info:

  • Ex is wanting to buy out (unmarried, mortgaged property).
  • We are in process of discussing amounts (after negotiating some costs etc.). This may lead to an agreement with solicitors e.g. timelines for getting money as I have been advised some people have ended up waiting for a long time!

Questions:

  • What to watch out for in general - e.g. things you might not have thought of at the start!
  • Once the ex starts the ball rolling for mortgage application - anything to watch out for? I am unsure of the process and the implications once that starts - e.g. could it be stopped and go back to existing? Anything about what to expect along this particular process would be great please.
  • Has anyone got experience of being bought out recently and decided to use a solicitor (I know you technically don’t have to as the one being bought out)? Roughly how much did you pay? (I am in South England)
  • General order of process? I assume once they have been approved for mortgage you then start the signing over of the house but any help gratefully received.
