Trouble getting the boiler on

My Boiler (Patterton, not combi, 10 years old) has been a bit dodgy over the last couple of years in that it doesn't always stop when switched off. This means I sometimes (but not always) have to turn it off at the socket to get it off. I keep meaning to get the Hive thing fitted never get around to it and don't know if that would solve it. I got someone out when it first happened and he could find nothing wrong. I mention it every year when it gets serviced and they all say to just carry on as I am and it's not a big deal. Boiler gets a clean bill of health every year, including when serviced in October - never any advisories.

Over the last month or so it has needed resetting several times as well as not always going off (as above). On NYE it needed resetting again but this time it would not go on. I have Emergency Home cover and they sent someone yesterday morning. He reset it and it came on (typical) and then he did some tinkering and going up and down to the tank (was here around 30 mins) but said he could find nothing wrong! Shortly after he left (he'd switched it off) I tried to get it on and it needed resetting a few times to come on. The light and flame kept going on and off but eventually it stayed on. I've left it on since due to the cold spell forecast as I really don't want burst pipes, but that's obviously not a long-term solution.

I have British Gas coming to have a look on Tuesday as I have their boiler cover package thing but I'm not hopeful and assume he'll just say he can't find anything. Once it's on it's absolutely fine and I know it will need replacing before too long but would love to be able to wait 5 years or so until dc have done Uni. Does anyone have any ideas?

It might have an intermittent fault. I had this with my Ideal combi, it sometimes didn't heat the water. Of course it behaved when the heating engineer came.. I got a new boiler.
