As per the title , has anyone seen anything like this before ?

where could they be coming from/going to ?

this has baffled me , this was in the bedroom on 1st floor.

(it’s a house I viewed with view to purchase )

TIA

What was the other side of the wall? Looks like someone has just maybe used the hole to run cable through for an extra socket or something, instead of drilling through the wall. Or if it’s an exterior wall was there a security light out there or something?

Difficult to see without knowing where the vent goes and that the cables are for but use it as an indicator that someone is keen at DIY with more enthusiasm than skill.

Some friends bought a house like that and my OH warned them just by looking at the RM photos that it looked a bit of a DIY nightmare.
They ignored him but he was proved right and they spent the next couple of years putting right lots of horrible DIY bodges, cost them a fair sum in time, money & heartache.

As per @Nourishinghandcream it’s a bad sign, or at least to be cautious. Surface mount electrics are never great, but can be perfectly functional. This however appears to be an amateur attempt.
Where is the rest of the skirting board? Do you have any further photos you are willing to share?

Doris86 · 28/12/2024 08:14

They are quite thin and round cables, so they look more like plug in extension cables rather than the main wiring of the house,

Looks a bit of a bodge but not necessarily dangerous. I wouldn’t let it put you off the house.

Diyextension · 28/12/2024 08:21

Could be they have just jointed the cable and shoved it behind the vent ?

Geneticsbunny · 28/12/2024 09:10

It is an old internet cable? Maybe to a security camera or something like that?

HowardTJMoon · 28/12/2024 09:25

I agree, those could well be ethernet cables and running then through ventilation ducts means you can get wired internet connections throughout the house without having to drill holes. It's sloppy work but I've seen it done.

I looked at exterior and I can see this aerial/antenna (feeling silly that I didn’t even think to look at external now) this must be it I assume ..

there are two wires and from what I’m assuming one must be to this aerial and the other is running around the skirting board of the room to this plug ..

please note the vent has been put in what looks to be a chimney breast area (although having looked externally there is no chimney now, perhaps there once was)

Probably to do with the aerial then. One wire is the aerial cable and the other one being power for a signal booster perhaps?

Not a major concern, just looks rubbish like that. Wouldn’t take much to do it properly when you move in, or just remove completely if you use a sky dish or internet for TV.

Are those ridge tiles ok? From the photo, looks like the cement has gone.

Thank you everyone, and I will check it out @HellsBalls , this is why I love this forum, always helpful and pointing out things I wouldn’t really notice !!

Thanks again :)
