Talk to me about Hive

I've moved into a new house, which is much smaller and I cannot work the heating out🤣
This is not like me at all things like this don't fuddle me however I've been thinking about hive for awhile. I'm just not sure where to start.

Do I need to speak to a professional to get my Home set up initially? Is it something I can do myself?

It's only the heating I would be interested in, but thank you in anticipation

we did it a while ago but it was bought through British Gas and they installed it. It’s brilliant! Lovely to be able to warm the house up ready for you when you’re travelling home etc!

Best thing ever. That said, mine went off line yesterday (which it has done periodically over the last 5 years) but this time won’t reset. I think it’s time for a new thermostat.

Dh set ours up easily. The hive app is great, I can press one button and give a boost if I rarely need extra hot water for a super hot bath.

AuntieMarys · 24/12/2024 06:58

Hive is great. We've just moved house and had it reinstalled in the new one even though there was Halo fitted.

GasPanic · 24/12/2024 07:10

Hive works pretty well most of the time.

If you need to ask whether you can install it yourself you probably can't.

The good news is buying it and fitting it is fairly cheap.

TheSeagullsSquawk · 24/12/2024 07:18

GasPanic makes a reasonable point - that if you are asking us probably better to hire someone to do it.

DH wouldn't agree to one for ages as he thought it would be hard to install but when I finally forced issue he found a YouTube video and discovered it was actually a doddle.

It's saved us a lot of money over our old thermostat as it just works better. Heating only on for a short time. Old thermostat would keep going for ages after it was up at temperature - we may have had a particularly ropey one!

Thank you all! @GasPanic very good point! But actually I really don't even get what it is?! I'll look into it further as I'm pretty good at diy and tech savvy (normally 🤣)

Hive is great. Remember to change the batteries in the unit if it goes offline!

So basically there are 4 ā€œbitsā€ to it- there’s a bit that attaches to the actual heating system- this is the bit that’s hard to install yourself- at least I wouldn’t attempt it. Then there’s a thermostat ( can have more than one if you want zones)- can either attach this to a wall or let it sit somewhere ( or can move it around) and then there’s a white box that attaches to the router that provides the internet connectivity. Finally there’s the app on your phone. The app is optional as can just use the thermostat as a manual control and to create schedules but then you don’t have remote control of the system.

@LaPalmaLlama thats so helpful thank you! I have two thermostats in the new house and assume they are already zones ie upstairs and downstairs. Bizarre to me as I have downsized massively!

going to seriously scope this out so thanks everyone for your input

We've had Hive for several years and last year asked our plumber to install Hive thermostatic radiator valves as well. We can now use the app to boost individual rooms as and when required rather than boosting an entire zone.

Nugg · 27/12/2024 20:02

So I talked to my daughter about this today and we do wonder if I even need it because I downsized massively and there's literally only me here most of thetime.
So I'll look into it!
