Insurance

I am thinking of buying a property. Could anyone tell me what sort of insurance I can get if I was to lose my job so that mortgage payments can be made? It's unlikely I will end up unemployed but wondering if there is any insurance backup

Moneysupermarket is always a good place to start with these questions.

There are different levels of insurance to cover different scenarios, from death, to critical illness, to unemployment.

I think the issue is, if you are in the sort of job where it enters your head to think you might lose your job, then the premiums are likely to be very high, and a big added cost.

My mortgage broker sorted out insurance which I think was payment protection.
Basically pays out and covers the balance of a mortgage if we can't. Death, critical illness etc.

I took something else that guarantees an income but that was on becoming a mum (so till son is 23) rather than because of the mortgage.
