Have I been swindled? (Carpet fitting)

I've never purchased a carpet before please bear in mind.
I need a carpet to be fitted within the next week in a 2.4m x 2.7m room. I visited a couple shops to get quotes but they didn't have "end of roll" options which is what we need otherwise there'll be too much excess.
I went to an independent shop who quoted me £220 which includes the underlay, carpet plus fitting. Is this a fair price? I don't have anything to compare it to!

@pikachooooo - If I am honest if that includes the carpet and underlay and labour for fitting I don't think £220 is out of line. Obviously you want to know this is the final price and you won't have to pay for offcuts ( or will they just leave them for you for mats - we've had this before )

But no - my opinion ( only ) you are not being swindled.

Balloonhearts · 21/12/2024 15:22

I'd say that's cheap!

Luckypoppy · 21/12/2024 15:23

Sounds cheap to me.

TheGirlattheBack · 21/12/2024 15:27

Independent carpet shops always work out more reasonably. The big chains charge too much for fitting and underlay. If you like the carpet you’ve chosen then go for it. We have used our local independent carpet shop for all of our carpets - they’ve been in business for years.

Amaranthasweetandfair · 21/12/2024 15:27

Very cheap

Mickey79 · 21/12/2024 15:55

That’s really cheap.

pikachooooo · 21/12/2024 16:22

Thank you ever so much everyone, I'm confident with my decision to go ahead 😃
Really appreciate the replies x

I'll keep this in mind and ask them on Monday, they're due to fit it on Tuesday, thank you for that point x

It's a small family run business so weirdly I trust them more than the big stores, I'm happy to support a local business. Even more reason to go ahead I guess x

That's ridiculously cheap!!

IkeaJesusChrist · 21/12/2024 17:18

That's a decent price, we always use the same independent guy for our flooring and he's much cheaper than the big chains.

Isseywith2witchycats · 21/12/2024 18:32

the independent carpet place weve got our carpets from charges a standard fee of £140 for fitting so youve got a bargain

Notaflippinclue · 22/12/2024 12:00

RIP his arm off

Tiswa · 22/12/2024 12:02

Of course you aren’t being swindled they are giving and fitting a product how much did you think it would be

CitiesInDust · 22/12/2024 12:05

Do you know what the price per sqm of the carpet you’re having is? Or what it works out as, if you’re having an end of roll. And what sort of underlay? It’s good to get the medium one rather than the very cheapest.

As a rule of thumb, they say fitting and underlay adds about the same again to the price of the carpet itself (if it’s a moderately cheap one, not a mega expensive one).

saveforthat · 22/12/2024 12:05

It does seem incredibly cheap but you have not said the quality of the carpet. How much is the carpet per sq metre? As this makes a big difference to the price.

VacuumPacked · 22/12/2024 12:10

I would like to add, when looking at ‘end of rolls’ size and price, take a calculator,
ask the price of the carpet normally, as though you would need more and work out the charge for the roll.
Many carpet companies rely on ‘an assumption of bargain price’ when actually,
they will cut up pieces of a poorly selling carpet, roll it up, stick on a hand written label, or SALE, whenit is actually the same price you would pay for buying it off
the roll.

Caveat emptor !

OP this seems reasonable if not cheap

TokyoSushi · 22/12/2024 12:21

Fitted before Christmas as well, bargain!

QuantumPanic · 22/12/2024 12:48

Really cheap. Our carpet fitting cost as much as the carpet itself, and I was under the impression that this was normal.

thedevilinablackdress · 22/12/2024 12:54

Surely without knowing the quality of the carpet and how it's priced compared to other shops it's impossible to say?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 22/12/2024 12:57

It also depends on the quality of the carpet, the quality of the underlay and if they are supplying all the bits to fit the carpet i.e. adhesive / gripper / door bar/s etc.

But

I think you have a good price, a bargain !
