I can't get this house out of my head!

It's perfect, except it's not because parking is on the opposite side of a busy road, and the traffic noise in the garden is far too high.

So gutted!

I guess that's why it's still on the market...

I was stuck in traffic outside this house at the weekend. It is beautiful, but there are definitely some down sides. to the location.
The wallpaper is bedroom 5 is just what I've been looking for - love it!

Sprig1 · 18/12/2024 13:19

The bones are nice but it could do with an injection of personality.

torqrench · 18/12/2024 13:21

It looks really expensive to heat if you are looking for another negative. It may literally be "one of the UK's coolest places to live"

Twiglets1 · 18/12/2024 14:44

Wow, it’s beautiful 🤩

Pipilifie · 18/12/2024 14:59

It is stunning but for the price I'd be wanting a detached. May be using some of it for interior design ideas for my own home though .
Also going way off topic how do they keep it so white and pristine?

Geneticsbunny · 18/12/2024 14:59

It is a beautiful house but it is really unbalanced and the layout for the kitchen diner is weird.
One reception room for 7 bedrooms is definitely not enough. Also why are there two kitchens? Does that mean the basement floor counts as an annex?

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 18/12/2024 15:03

The exterior is nice but the location is terrible - I guess that's reflected in the price though. Some of the rooms are tiny.

BrieAndChilli · 18/12/2024 15:12

it is very bedroom heavy - I would want a lot more reception rooms as well as the 7 bedrooms.

Gekko21 · 18/12/2024 16:17

Looks like the estate agent is just guessing at the price. Was originally listed for £1.475k in June and then reduced by £80K in August and still not sold. Could potentially get down-valued during mortgage valuation so I'd be reticent if the agent doesn't have a reasonable idea of what it's worth.

Also, way too many floors. Who is the basement for - the servants? Is there a separate staircase running up to the servant's quarters at the top? It just seems so impractical for a modern family. Style over substance and with no off-street parking and such a small garden to boot. Realistically, it probably wants breaking up into apartments, especially given its proximity to the centre of town. Most people on here seem to moan about 3 floors, let alone 5!! The top heavy nature of it means it might make a good guesthouse and I notice it's right next to the hotels so in the right location for it.

You certainly get a lot of bang for your buck in Yorkshire 😮

Poggishairtufts · 18/12/2024 16:36

It's all yours OP, I don't like agas or free standing baths

hairbearbunches · 18/12/2024 16:52

Isn't this on vomit alley? We looked at a house on the mount a few years ago without knowing York very well. There's a big hotel just down the road from here, it's not the nicest part of town. There was puke all over on Sunday morning. That's why it's not sold. No-one in their right mind would pay 1.4 million to live in the shitty end of town.

We're just down the road so I know the traffic well!

Yes, self contained flat downstairs

As a fellow Londoner, don't be a UFL

You haven't a clue what you're talking about! It's not in a shitty part of town at all!

🤣🤣🤣🤣. Shame. Stunning house but very bedroom heavy. And the puke ain't good.

It did indeed used to be a guest house, The Ashberry. Would explain the number of bedrooms with ensuite as well as lack of reception rooms. I assume the owners lived in the basement flat then

CombatLingerie · 18/12/2024 18:51

@Pipilifie I was imagining the occupants changing into those white paper boiler suits that forensics people wear. They put them on as soon as they get home every day. York is too busy nowadays.

Ah ha! The layout makes much more sense knowing that.

ilovepixie · 18/12/2024 19:01

I million for a house and the stairs aren't fully carpeted! I remember a time fully carpeted stairs was the height of luxury.

hairbearbunches · 18/12/2024 22:11

I wouldn’t pay that kind of money to live a few doors down from a cheap Ibis hotel. There’s god knows how much traffic and a ton of traffic lights. No thanks.

Justleaveitblankthen · 18/12/2024 22:54

The shower though!
Definitely needs an update 😬
