Flood prevention

I'm looking for advice on flood prevention: specifically does anyone know of a company/ service who will come and assess a domestic site/property that has been flooded and advise on preventative measures?

Google flood risk assessment and flood prevention surveyors, loads of companies come up that say they do homeowners, as well as businesses or developers.

depending on the depth of the previous flood the means of entry for water are:

  • surging up though the drains, be that the toilet bowl or a plug hole -preventive measure: fit one way value on waste pipes
  • coming round the door gaps - preventive measure: cheap and not 100% effective replace the door seals. Perfect, but very expensive, fit a flood door
  • coming round window gaps - preventive measure: easy enough to maintain sealant around all gaps/openings.
  • if you have suspended floors with external air bricks below the DPC then water enters through the air bricks and up through the floor. Preventive measure: either fit manual covers on them in advance of flooding or replace then with special self sealing anti flood airbricks. It is vital that at all other times the air brick remains open or you will get problems with rot setting in.

If floods ever came through the walls themselves then it would be wiser to give up and move

The National Flood Forum give very good advice in this area.

@Wot23 very difficult to defeat nature. You are correct that moving is in many cases the best course of action.
It’s possible, and expensive, to build a suitably deep concrete wall around the property, with waterproof gates, combined with sump pumps and generators.
