What can I do, if anything?

I got the keys last week for my house. The vendors told us on the viewing they would leave all kitchen appliances and also confirmed this in the fixtures and fittings form.

I've moved in today and gone to use the dishwasher and there's no power. I've changed the fuse and checked the plug and nothing. The estate agents have contacted vendors who said it was working the day before they left.

There's nothing I can do is there?

When you say there’s no power, does any other electrical item work when plugged into the socket? Is it the dishwasher which is broken or the socket which doesn’t have power?

If it’s the dishwasher, practically, it will be a question of proving that it was already broken prior to completion. You may just have to cut your losses and have it repaired or replace it: even if you could prove they knew the dishwasher wasn’t working before you took ownership, if they left you behind a five year old dishwasher, you’re not entitled to a brand new one just because the old one has stopped working, any remedy has to be reasonable.

The socket is fine, I plugged the dryer into it and it worked fine so its definitely the dishwasher that's broken.

I'm afraid these things happen. It could have happened the second time you used it. Just one of those things. Things break.

I had to get the boiler repaired before I moved in. Got the keys on the 11th, moved in on the 19th.
Took my sister to see the house on about the 14th, and the boiler was dead!

I think you just have to chalk these things up to teething problems.

Have you tried changing the fuse?

Doris86 · 06/12/2024 20:38

Not nothing you can do other than buy a new dishwasher really.

You could try pursuing the matter through legal channels, but that will cost you a lot more than a new dishwasher would.

They did leave the dishwasher though, it just doesn’t work! Did they say anywhere that it did work? It’s annoying, but as others have said, there is little you can do really. At least you can wash up by hand for a few days till you get a new one. It would have been more of a pain if the cooker or fridge didn’t work!

Is there a separate isolator switch for it that's been turned off?

FayCarew · 06/12/2024 22:14

Are there any lights or display that you'd expect to see?
Have you checked that they haven't switched off the water supply to the dishwasher?
