Kitchen Cupboard Paint

somemothersdo · 03/12/2024 22:24

I'm looking to buy some reasonably priced kitchen cupboard paint to smarten up a kitchen. Obviously I'm looking for the best possible option for a given price - easy to apply, looks like it does on the tin and so on.

Any recommendations please?

Rustoleum kitchen cabinet paint

Mmmkaay · 03/12/2024 22:52

Rust-Oleum kitchen paint - amazing coverage and resistance to chips. I'm 3 years in and have not yet had to top up paint.

ttconeyron · 04/12/2024 01:00

hi @WhatMe123 and @Mmmkaay , can you use this paint on cabinets made with veneer? thank you

WhatMe123 · 04/12/2024 06:49

@ttconeyron yes just give it a light sand to take off the sheen. It says you don't need to prime but I primed ours, I used the zinsser water based primer as it sticks to anything then I put three coats of the rustoleum on. I used a small roller for it and it's great

From high gloss cream to the green

You’ll need a good primer. I think the one we used was called zinsser bin. You can put it on essentially any surface (even glass and gloss) and the paint sticks to it

We used Rustoleum on wood cabinets, just cleaned them well, no primer. They still look perfect after 2 years.

Thank you so much for this advice. Much appreciated.

This looks really good 👍 😊

Very impressive @WhatMe123! Would you mind running over how you did the rollering? Did you remove all the doors, drawer fronts etc and lay them flat, etc to apply the primer/paint?

WhatMe123 · 04/12/2024 23:11

@Lunaballoon hi I took the doors off and removed the handles to sand them but I actually painted them whilst back on. Zinsser primer dries really quick and so does rustoleum cabinet paint so I just left the doors open whilst the dried. I did one coat of the primer and I did need three coats of the rustoleum paint to get a good coverage but it's worth it.

WhatMe123 · 04/12/2024 23:12

Also meant I could do the front and back at the same time rather than having to lay them on one side and only paint the other

Spagettifunctional · 04/12/2024 23:13

Would this work on dining room chairs ?

EssentiallyItsTrue · 04/12/2024 23:29

I'd use Zinsser Allcoat Exterior in Satin. Lightly sand the existing surface then use a foam roller. It give a lovely finish and is amazingly durable. You can also have it tinted any colour you want. The coverage is great too. It's an easy paint to use.
I've not used the Rust-Oleum paint but I'm sure that good too. It's a bit more expensive that the Zinsser I think.

I did one of my Aunties kitchens in deep green Zinsser about 4 years ago and it's still looking pristine despite being a busy kitchen.

If I'm painting kitchens I usually leave the cupboard doors on. I remove the handles if there are any. It's such an easy and effective way to spruce up a kitchen I don't know why people don't do it more often.

Seaitoverthere · 05/12/2024 04:26

I’m midway painting kitchen and have tried the Rustoleum and Zinsser allcoat, am finding the latter better and I like that it can be colour matched to any colour.

I’m not sanding and have used Zinsser Bin as primer but ran out and about to switch to Zinsser 123 plus . Previously did one in a Johnstones trade oil eggshell with Zinsser 123 and looks good 5 years later.

WhatMe123 · 05/12/2024 06:36

@Spagettifunctional yes you can
Paint most things these days. There's good primers out there which stick to anything and then loads of furniture paint available. Just give things a good clean, use sugar soap before you paint to remove any grime that may stop the primer sticking

Spagettifunctional · 05/12/2024 07:29

Thank you so much (a while ago I talked to a professional painter who mentioned a shellac primer so I need to go to the local specialist shop and see what they have)
thanks again

Zinsser Bin is a shellac primer.

WhatMe123 · 05/12/2024 11:11

I like this one but you can use the red one too, that is the shellac one

Seaitoverthere · 05/12/2024 22:10

I used that one today @WhatMe123 and found unlike the red one I was getting runs. Have dealt with them but was a pain. I did stir well, is this normal for the plus?

3littlelambs · 05/12/2024 22:49

I painted my kitchen cupboards with Zinsser Allcoat exterior satin. I had it matched to Farrow and Ball Green Smoke. It looks great and even though I used a brush it levelled out.

Didsomeonesaydogs · 05/12/2024 22:56

I used frenchic brand paint on kitchen cupboards in our old house. Worked well.

WhatMe123 · 06/12/2024 06:49

@Seaitoverthere I've never had a problem with it being runny 🤔. I always use a foam roller. Could you have been putting too much on? Sounds like you've had a bit of a nightmare 🫣 if there's any lumpy bits you'll be able to sand them back prior to painting so at least it'll be all flat before you paint

Seaitoverthere · 06/12/2024 07:44

Thanks @WhatMe123 . I was painting doors which had built in handles and it was the handles that were the issue though the main part of the door wasn’t looking good with a foam roller at one point. I switched to 2 fussy blokes roller and things improved.

I did sort out the handles in the end and I think they will be ok wire a bit of sanding. It just took me by surprise a bit as have used various Zinsser products with out issue before. Love the Allcoat and going to get some of that on today and I think it will be fine then.
