Storage costs

Has anyone stored furniture for a while prior to buying another house? I’m thinking of renting a while and may end up storing my furniture. Wondered what the average cost was.

We did. This is going back 2 years. The costs depended on the size of the storage unit. I think ours was about £100 a month but we had a good deal. That fitted about half a garage worth of stuff (so not much). You can get quotes from websites like Big Yellow, Safestore, Pickfords etc, and sometimes they'll beat the quote if you phone them; just see where is near to you!

I used Big Yellow for a shipment of stuff ( whole house of furniture) when we moved back from Asia. I had 250 sq ft and it was about 400/month so you need to think about if it’s cheaper to just buy everything again. They are good though- the place is v clean and the climate control is excellent.

We've currently got some stuff in storage while we have building work going on. It's in a 10ft container (that seems to be a standard size) that costs about £90/month. When we moved house a couple of years ago, we rented a 20ft container from the same place for about £130/month. The 20ft container fitted in most of the stuff from a 3-bedroom house (apart from some of the bigger furniture like sofas and dining table) - and we have a lot of crap Grin.

It varies a bit between providers, so worth phoning around. It definitely was cheaper to get inaccessible storage, rather that the one you can access 24hr/day so make sure you do that.

I'm paying £100/month for half a shipping container.

We rented a unit the size of a double garage and initially it was £150 a month for the first 12 weeks and then I think went up to around £280, that was in 2022

I made some queries about this this week at Storage Mart. Think it was £180 per month for 50 sq foot (5 x 10 x 8 foot high) and £197 per month for 60 sq feet. Can rent month by month.

Ok, thanks. I think I’ll reconsider.
