Dream houses you’ll never buy

Does anyone else track certain houses when they come up for sale or wistfully think ‘one day’ when you pass it? Even when it just simply doesn’t work for you?

There is an old coach house near me. Spectacular views but it has been knocked about and extended really in a really crappy way in more than one direction. It would need so much doing to it and not just cosmetically.

Ditto a Victorian villa near my parents. Shame about the cemetery next door and the fact it is uninhabitable due to disrepair.

Nothing wrong with living next to a cemetery. The neighbours are very peaceful.

Is that your dream @MrsSkylerWhite ?

Twiglets1 · 05/11/2024 16:24

I have a bit of a dream to buy the holiday house we stay in when visiting the in laws because it’s Victorian double bay fronted which I love & a 5 minute walk to the beach.

I never will though despite it’s apparently being sold next year. It’s shabby chic and has moved more towards the shabby side over recent years so would cost £££ to update.

Also, I can’t afford to buy a second home so there’s that.

Yes all the time, Rightmove browsing is my hobby 😆

Same 😁Generally things I could never afford!

arinya · 06/11/2024 19:44

I’m not interested in the mega-homes that cost millions. I’m mainly interested in the homes that have my fantasy layout and tend to cost double what our house costs 😄

arinya · 06/11/2024 19:47

I was watching a house for months that finally went under offer the day before ours went on the market. Dream layout and we could actually afford it, if we could sell ours. Nevermind.

Love a thatched cottage but would
never buy one because of the cost of replacing the roof and the concern about fire! They are gorgeous though 😍

Is that your dream ** ?

No, we’re retiring to a city centre penthouse. Our first joint home was a Norman church conversion, surrounded by graveyards with more graves in the basement. It was serene.

thereisamouseinthehouse · 07/11/2024 05:01

Yes! When we were discussing Christmas plans the other day, I found myself thinking "of course, if we've moved by then, we'd be able to do this instead", a thought which ignored the fact that there is a gap of a few million between the price of the house I am lusting after and anything we could possibly afford and that it's right by the river so I would never buy it as I wouldn't want the risk of flooding.
There's another place which we could afford but, as it's a 2 up/2 down, it's where I'm planning on downsizing to once the DC have left home and DH has died. As it's on a side road, I wouldn't usually drive past it but often do a little detour. Parking might be an issue but I don't think I'll have a car then. DH was with me one day when I did this unnecessary detour and then I made a comment on the house which led to me having to explain my plans. He was a bit surprised!

DutifulDaughterWifeMother · 07/11/2024 05:02

Yup that’s me! Checking Rightmove constantly is something I do quite religiously 😬

How I would love a house that has a bigger garden for my dog & a gated drive so he can run around freely.

I’m not asking for a lot really….😉

Unfortunately I doubt I will find one in my price range plus the kids & OH don’t want the upheaval of moving.

thereisamouseinthehouse · 07/11/2024 08:10

@DutifulDaughterWifeMother to be honest, I can't be bothered with the hassle of moving either (sorting out the garage alone would take weeks let alone the loft) so my dream plan involves keeping our current house whilst moving into the new one. I figure out that anything which we haven't taken from the current house after a few years would be surplus to requirements so I'd just get a clearance company in or something. Or perhaps DH and the DC could keep living in the current house and I could go & live a peaceful and tidy life in the new house, nipping back home when I was missing them.

This one. Only about £8m over budget 🤪

MulberryPeony · 08/11/2024 08:24

Oh that swimming pool is very nice @propertyporn1. That is my DHs kind of house.

Was the surprise that he would be dead lol @thereisamouseinthehouse?

This is fabulous hunting ground. I live hundreds of miles away from most of these houses and have no intention of moving but still love looking. 😀
