Which way is my garden facing?

I'm useless with this sort of thing but can anyone tell which way my back garden is facing from the photo below? It was taken at 11.18 in the morning.

Thanks to anyone cleverer than me 😂

Which way is my garden facing?

Most smartphones have a compass on them. Stand facing your garden and use the app to show you. Otherwise look at your house on Google maps.

Think back to your geography lessons at school, OP!

Lytlethings · 27/10/2024 09:56

The simple way is to stand at your back patio door. Which side does the sun rise in the morning. That is direct east, the other side is direct west. From those two you can easily work out the rest. One side of your house will always be in shade first thing . That is North. Sun will pass from east to west
Hope that helps

FGSWhatNow · 27/10/2024 09:59

South-westish

Seaside3 · 27/10/2024 10:00

I'm guessing south west. More west than south.
Where does the sun come up and set?

Try this with your own address

https://www.suncalc.org/#/50.8344,-0.1958,18/2023.11.04/14:33/1/3

In this case 320 Portland Road, Hove is south(ish) facing.

That’s great! Thank you, I’m looking up all
the places I lived as a kid to see if I’d remembered correctly

iwantabreakfastpantry · 27/10/2024 10:03

Geez, really? I am sorry but you should at least be able to look on google maps and be able to tell from that where your garden is relative to your house - e.g if north of your house then it’s north facing.
Or look at where there sun is in the morning - if you look out onto your garden and the sun is on the right then your garden is north facing.
Or use a compass as PP says.

Our garden is north facing but has light for most of the day as there are no buildings to the north, west or east so we can’t necessarily tell from your photo.

This.
It's winter in that photo, so no summer time to mess up the assessment.

ETA, you can tell by the angle of the shadows.

pinkroses79 · 27/10/2024 10:07

Mine faces west. The sun sets in the west, so we see this every evening in line with the garden. My iphone compass confirms it.

That is very harsh. Just because the op asks for help with something they do not know. Why should they know. I get a total brain freeze when looking at a map or a compass.

gano · 27/10/2024 10:13

Take not of where the sun rises and sets. It rises in the east, and sets in the west. Then you can tell which way your house faces from that.

I accept I was harsh but it’s something she/he can work out by googling - there is just a general rush nowadays to expect sometime else to problem solve for them.

NormaLouiseBates · 27/10/2024 10:28

Sorry I should have said I'm not at the house at the moment, it's our new house that we're moving into next week and that was a photo I took the other day when we were there.

Thank you to everyone who responded kindly and helpfully 😉

Mumsnet would loose half of its posts if that was a rule

Could be a new build that’s not on maps yet

@NormaLouiseBates

its ok not to know everything!!

I thought it didn't look very lived in!!

Good Luck with the move & I hope you're really happy there!

NormaLouiseBates · 27/10/2024 13:13

@BrieHugger spot on... it isn't on any maps yet!

@Lytlethings thank you, that's really kind of you to say 😊 I know most of mumsnet would rather live in a swamp than a new build but I'm very excited 😂

OP posts:
Lytlethings · 27/10/2024 14:10

I have lived in two new builds and would not choose any other for my next move. Exciting time for you, I hope you will br very happy there. The great things about new build is not having to live with another persons’ choice until you can afford your own.

i think it faces South because the of the house causing a shadow. In the summer by 11am the sun will be higher.

I assume some of the new builds where you’re moving have solar panels - they predominantly face south.
Satellite dishes are angled to face south. HTH OP.
Enjoy your new home.

Yeah I've definitely got nothing better to do with my time than pretend I don't know which way my garden is facing 👍🏻

And who said I've bought it?

Why rent a detached house? What? Why wouldn't someone rent a detached house? That question makes no sense!
