Removals company vs doing it yourself

We're hoping to complete at the beginning of January. Moving from our 3 bed terrace to a 3 bed semi 20 minutes away. We're considering not stumping up for a removals company and doing it ourselves, which is what we've always done in the past (somehow with only a Fiat Punto!) Are we crazy? I'm planning to rent a Luton van or two which will be about £300 and buy the boxes. Here's the kicker: if we complete any time in January, my husband will be away with work, so it'll be me, two small children, family and any willing friends. Am I crazy? I just don't feel like we can justify the (£1500+) cost of the movers. Any stories of people who have succesfully DIY moved? Good or bad.

Compared to all the other associated moving costs, professional removals and packers were cheap.
They were so good. It would have taken me weeks to do what they did in one day. Money well spent.

Of all the things you spend loads of money on when moving - ££& to estate agent; £££ to solicitors and surveyors etc is all very bad value for money compared with whatever you pay the movers - worth every penny!!!

So to add to the chorus- you'd be mad to DIY it

Last time we moved we hired removers, but packed ourselves ( but we had help from the 17 year old twins next door to pack, and to sort rubbish/recycling)

They're worth every penny.

Not sure solicitors are “bad value” without them you don’t actually own the house 🙄.

Dont even think this is a dilemma not sure what you were proposing is even physically possible.

We moved from a flat to a house with a 10 week old baby. DH hired a van and spent over many hours shunting stuff between the two places. It took much longer than anticipated and every hour of the 24 hour van hire was needed. I remember being in my new bed at 3 am, DH still out and baby wide eyed at being somewhere different. Never again!
