Skylight Opening vs Fixed

Hi,

Anyone who isn't bored with helping my decision making...? I'll try to keep this snappy :-).

Ground floor extension for open plan kitchen/sitting room and 3m bifolds, NW facing.

Open pitched roof with 4 skylights in the design, which I need to choose. The light to the space is just skylights and doors. There IS a side door further towards the original house.

I'm not all that fussed with the idea of opening skylights and they do seem quite a bit more expensive.

The skylights as planned are BIG 1x1.5m so I get I could probably go with smaller as well.

I don't know if I'm being unwise discounting opening ones really on the grounds of cost, seems to be 2x price. There will be the side "back" door as well for draft.

I'd love to hear any feedback on how much they use theirs, if it's a really noticeable advantage because it gets so hot etc etc., or anything else that I haven't even thought of!!!

I guess big skylights and more light = more heat to TRAP, too.

Thank you!!!

Flies.
Open doors in the summer, flies come in and go up to the skylights, then can't get out. Had this in a previous house.
Get opening ones.
Also heat rises, opening skylights will let it out.

We have an opening one. It is open all the time in the summer. I am glad we chose it.

Opening- easier to clean.

Definitely opening due to flies as a previous poster said. We have 3 non-opening in a flat roof extension with 4.5m bifolds. Didn't think they'd need to open for ventilation, but I hadn't factored in the bloody flies! Might not be as bad in a pitched roof, but I'd definitely think about having openers.

Yes flies are a real problem, we had non opening and had to change it to an opening one due to the constant build up of flies getting trapped and eventually dying and dropping over the floor, it was very annoying and expensive to put right.

We have a very similar extension to yours. Our roof lights open but we rarely have them open and don’t have a problem with flies. The one thing I would recommend is blinds on them, we have ours shut a lot in the summer as we can’t see the tv if we don’t! 😂
