Regularisation of load bearing wall removal

We are in the process of selling our house and it has come up that we have removed a load bearing wall without building regulations sign off.
The wall we removed was between the living room and an existing extension that was done prior to us purchasing the property.
Completely our fault, builder said it wasn't necessary to get permission and we didn't look into it any further.
Our buyer has asked that we get the works retrospectively signed off so we have spoken to a surveyor at the council who has said they will need to confirm what lintel was put in and then they can (hopefully) issue a certificate for it.
The builder we used is on holiday but has text back to say he'll go back through his paperwork when he gets back at the weekend and try and find the invoice for the lintel, otherwise the council will have to remove some of the plaster/plasterboard where the lintel is to confirm it is adequate.
Does anyone have any experience of doing this and know roughly what costs we're facing and the timescale?
Thankfully it has come up early on in the process rather than months down the line but I am so stressed, more so because it's my own bloody fault!
