Home insurance cancelled

I had home insurance on my bungalow. Mid way through the policy I started building work to convert this to a house so I notified the insurance company this was starting. This is not something they cover so they cancelled my building insurance. My builders were insured so I just didn't have home insurance during this time. However what I didn't realise is I now have to declare I've had home insurance cancelled and this is adding £400 to every quote, which seems very unfair. Has anyone managed to get this written off in such by an insurance company? Would have been better just to not tell them and not claim if I had known this would happen

That's not what having insurance cancelled means. You effectively cancelled your own policy because your insurance didn't cover what you needed. Having a policy cancelled by an insurer refers to not declaring or wrongly noting a claim, non payment of premiums or fraud.

Your insurer could no longer insure you because of the building work. In effect you were the one who cancelled not them.
