Can you live in a one bedroom flat, long term?

DP and I are thinking about buying a one bed flat. Our options are:

a) buy a one bed in Zone 1/2 and either have a short commute or walk to work; or

b) buy a two bed in Zone 3 and have a slightly longer commute

The two bed would cost more to run, and we like the idea of not over stretching ourselves so we can afford to invest money in non-property options.

Does it really need to be either/or though? You might find you can get something on the edges of Zone 2/3 that has the extra bedroom and a short commute. Also plenty of places in Zones 3 which have really quick travel times.
Do you need the flexibility of having a bit more space longer term?

If you are used to living together and don't need space to wfh both at the same time then I'd definitely go more central and save on commuting in time and money.

If you end up splitting and having to live there whilst the house is being sold, you would have no choice but to share a room/one sleeps on the sofa in the communal living area.
