In a world of infinite choice what colour would you paint your kitchen units?

Luxury problem to have I realise but we've recently moved into a Victorian house with a relatively new shaker kitchen in the standard side return extension. We need to make a few adjustments and fortunately the sellers gave us the number of the joiners that built it. The whole house is grey and I mentioned how institutional and cold I was finding it so they said that as the adjustments mean re-spraying a good few of the doors anyway it will only cost slightly more to re-spray the whole kitchen.

They can colour match to literally any colour and it's got two runs with a largish island in the middle so two different colours is also an option.

I feel a bit overwhelmed by the options/aspirational images/kitchen trend articles. So would love some real world opinions on what colour/s you'd choose for a kitchen if you were doing yours now?

I would avoid colours, its such a current trend and is going to die REAL quick.

I would personally go darker woods like walnut, however I think the fashion might move to oak as thats the 'in' wood.

FreeSausages · 27/09/2024 09:57

Butter yellow

Echobelly · 27/09/2024 10:10

Honestly either cream or a wood finish. I was just thinking about next kitchen style andcnoticed that colours are in and while they do look very nice they are going to get dated fast!

Fashiononono · 27/09/2024 10:11

I wanted Fenix doors in 'Azzurro Naxos' (blue) but couldn't afford it so I found the colour code and got MDF doors made to size and painted ourselves - the match is perfect and I love it.

bilbodog · 27/09/2024 10:19

im doing mine soon and having f&b hay for the base and wall units and f&b churlish green for my island with oak worktops.

BarbedButterfly · 27/09/2024 10:20

Navy with a dark wood top

CassieMaddox · 27/09/2024 10:24

I'm doing mine and having mid green cupboards, cream tiles, probably a much lighter sage on the walls.

It depends how you want it to match in with the rest of the house and your style. If I was in your position and had to choose something quickly while slowly updating the rest of the house I'd go for cashmere, which matches with cool/grey tones and warm/beige tones. Then you can choose paint/accessories slower time as you decide what you want your look to be.

I think dusty pink would look nice with your floor and worktops

Thanks everyone for all the advice and suggestions @Allthegoodnamesarechosen you've hit the nail on the head, it's a terrible layout and we're trying to make it at least functional/not actively dangerous. The joiners told us they'd tried to point out all the issues to the owner but they'd designed it themselves and wouldn't hear of it. I honestly thought about ripping it all out and starting again but I just can't bring myself to do that as it's basically new.

i love pink and would love a pink kitchen but I think dh is less keen. I also love yellow and sage green and this thread has been really useful because yellow and pink are not as out there as I thought! I don't want to regret playing it too safe but also don't want to regret going crazy and it sounds like people who have just gone with what they loved haven't regretted it so there's definitely a lesson there to be brave. Thanks again everyone I picked up some stick on samples and I am thinking of maybe the light colour on the walls, the taupey pink on the main runs and the dark red/purple on the island as a compromise. Dh still not super keen but it feels pinkish without being too out there

I'd do white for units and paint the walls something I loved, then change the wall colour whenever I felt like a change. That's what I've done anyway!

I think it is great you are painting not removing.

LadyCurd · 28/09/2024 08:29

Defo two colours. We did f&b calamine on wall of units and railings on lower units and I absolutely love it. It’s warm but also striking. If it was all one or the other would either be too much pink or too dark and cold.
scuse mess in photo

I like these! Similar look to @ladycurd which also looks great.

lovelydayIhave · 28/09/2024 08:43

I want to go with butter yellow and warm orange/ yellowish walls- our kitchen space is just too cold and gloomy- I want the permanent autumn colours vibe.

lovelydayIhave · 28/09/2024 08:45

Something like this.🍂🍁

I have seen the most beautiful kitchen which had a neutral white/off white on the outer units, and f&b sulking room pink just on the island. The floors and counter tops were very like yours too

it was so lovely and bright and airy, and the colour is not too 'in your face' so I think less likely to get tired of it.

Could also use this tactic with any other bright colour too, I suppose, i.e. keeping your bolder colour just to the island.

I also agree from watching interiors accounts on Instagram etc that it seems "naked" wood is coming back in, I've seen some nice examples but not sure if I'm totally sold on it yet. The most important thing is to do something that makes you happy every time you walk in!

CompletelyLost24 · 28/09/2024 08:54

We did ours last year and I still love it.

Sulking room pink on the lower units, and then school house white (a warm white/looks almost creamy) on the upper units and walls.

It was previously grey (Worsted and one two shades lighter, something that began with P), and I love the change.

Despite our room having windows on 3 sides it’s quite a deep room and so was actually quite dark. The warmer colours really make a difference to the room.

ThePoetsWife · 28/09/2024 08:56

Not navy - it's becoming outdated

I have farrow and ball bone - a fantastic warm neutral that changes with the light

DiscoBeat · 28/09/2024 08:58

Ours is a bespoke hand made in solid pine (very old, wonky house). It's real craftsmanship and absolutely nothing wrong except it looked dated so it's now cream eggshell. But it needs a repaint and I'm following for ideas! I like pink but no way will DH and two teen boys!

Imalongtimepostingmum · 28/09/2024 09:00

Our shaker kitchen is 'Middleton pink'. Love it. Thatched house.

Imalongtimepostingmum · 28/09/2024 09:00

And FWIW DH really likes it too. Kids have never noticed.

Painted in 2018 and still looks great. We have white worktops and copper handles.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/09/2024 09:13

We have cream base and wall units which have lovely blue and red William Morris style tiles above and a blue range cooker then a big blue pantry unit on the other wall and a huge island which is red.

After all that we actually went for grey on the walls but have yellow curtains and lots of wood and the legs of the dining room table are painted blue and the chairs painted various colours so it all works quite well.

TheCatsPaw · 28/09/2024 09:16

I also have calamine & railings like a PP. The railings mainly looks black due to the light in the room. Calamine is almost neutral but softly pink. We've had it about 4 years now before pink was starting to become popular and pink was DH's idea. I think don't worry about trends just go with what you'll enjoy. I'm sure my kitchen is not to many people's taste but it suits us.

Ooh I love calamine and railings together.

My kitchen is turquoise (Fired Earth Hummingbird, to be precise). It's a decade old now but it still makes me happy.

Oooh can we see a picture?
