In a world of infinite choice what colour would you paint your kitchen units?

Luxury problem to have I realise but we've recently moved into a Victorian house with a relatively new shaker kitchen in the standard side return extension. We need to make a few adjustments and fortunately the sellers gave us the number of the joiners that built it. The whole house is grey and I mentioned how institutional and cold I was finding it so they said that as the adjustments mean re-spraying a good few of the doors anyway it will only cost slightly more to re-spray the whole kitchen.

They can colour match to literally any colour and it's got two runs with a largish island in the middle so two different colours is also an option.

I feel a bit overwhelmed by the options/aspirational images/kitchen trend articles. So would love some real world opinions on what colour/s you'd choose for a kitchen if you were doing yours now?

i think the dark green and navy are the new dark grey, so they’re on their way out. What’s your favourite colour? Go for a variation on that and don’t go madly fashionable, and you should still like it down the line. I’d do pale blue myself, cos it’s my favourite colour.

I think burgundy is going to be the new green.

It’s not around much yet, but it’s coming. It’s is as grown up and distinctive as green or navy, but much warmer and more ‘food appropriate ‘.

I love the blue and yellow of Monet’s kitchen in Giverny. So cheerful. The blue one has blue and white delft tiles.

If I could choose without considering anyone else? Yellow. Brightest neon canary fucking yellow..!

But I won't 😁

PocketSand · 26/09/2024 18:18

It all depends on the light your room receives - I was set on sage green until the kitchen fitter brought around and left
we with me doors that I could move around.

Choose a colour that suits your house and its surroundings and that makes you happy. No one cares what colours are 'in' or 'out'. Don't just think about colours, who not introduce some lovely bespoke touches that makes your kitchen unique.

Dusky pink!

Devilsmommy · 26/09/2024 18:27

Recently replaced my cupboard doors and drawer fronts for forest green. Very cosy

BeyondMyWits · 26/09/2024 18:39

I wouldn't change ours, but may have to soon as the surface is wearing thin. It is grey, it was fitted by Magnet in the 70s, solid as a rock, and has been in fashion around 6 times!
It is a lovely matt mid grey that goes so well with both white (worktops) and a warm cream or pink or sage... (sometimes our walls).

We've had a while to try different colours.😁

LoquaciousPineapple · 26/09/2024 18:44

We had cobalt blue cupboards and I loved them. We had them resprayed to something more neutral last week as we're planning to sell (and my painting was starting to look a bit tatty).

We went with grey, but a really nice warm grey. It's Dove Tale by F&B. I'm usually very anti-grey and anti-boring colours but I'm so happy with these. It has a slightly purple tone to it making it a bit more interesting and warmer than a cold grey while still being neutral.

In my forever home, I'd go with an orange kitchen. Either Charlotte's Locks by F&B or a slightly redder/rustier orange.

Delphigirl · 26/09/2024 18:44

I would say dark blues and greens look overly trendy and dated. I would say go with a clearer lighter colour or two that give you joy separately and together. Maybe a butter yellow or a knocked back mint green or an aubergine and a more neutral. Don’t worry about resale or trends and just choose what you like. There must be colours you are drawn to.

Delphigirl · 26/09/2024 18:45

I’ve got charlottes locks in my kitchen @LoquaciousPineapple - 14 years and I’m not bored of it yet because I love it!

Delphigirl · 26/09/2024 18:45

Actually 12.5 years

PTSDBarbiegirl · 26/09/2024 18:47

Antique white as everything else dates.

MissyB1 · 26/09/2024 18:50

A really warm buttery cream.

Geneticsbunny · 26/09/2024 19:08

That lovely 1930s green colour which is a bit like copper verdigris

WildCherryBlossom · 26/09/2024 21:48

Oh yes @Geneticsbunny that green 1939s / verdigris is truly gorgeous.

But you need to tread carefully when choosing as, to the casual observer, it's quite similar to hospital corridor green.

Hopefully without totally outing myself and to answer some questions about the current units etc. there are no tiles, wood floors and a marbleish quartz, these are some photos of the current kitchen. Please excuse the mess!

If that’s the only sink, you need to move either the hob or the sink to be in line with each other or at the very least on the same side of the island. The current layout is really dangerous if you ever cook anything which involves boiling water.

Current colour is very Spartan,,it’s all chilly. Although it is large it seems quite cramped because the corridor on either side of the island is about as barrow as it can feasibly be. I would be inclined to paint the whole thing in a warm cream, maybe have the wall of doors a tone or two darker than the floor units.the cornice could be another tone to pick it out and break it up. Dark colours advance, so a strong colour will just emphasise the long narrow feel. Then paint the window wall a stronger, warmer tone, maybe terracotta to bring some warmth in.

Maybe change the knobs to metal to give a bit of reflection? Or get some really snazzy handles, all the handles in such a big kitchen don’t have to be the same, it can look much more interesting to have two or three different shapes within the same material.

sweetpickle2 · 27/09/2024 08:36

Recently painted mine orange, so potentially no help to you!

Previously mine were navy and the room was very cold, so I wouldn't choose navy.

My mum painted her kitchen doors orange was such a warm cheery room in childhood.
Was in the late 70s and the wallpaper was brown with big orange and cream dots.

My current colour crushes are deep reds browns, terracotta.

But, I think you need to be brave to go for those in your kitchen as there a lot of units.

Honestly, I'd consider swapping some if the big doors in the bank on the for glass ones to break it up a little, it's quite a lot with the islandand the opposite units.

That aside, take a look at devol kitchens on Instagram. They have some very beautiful colours and ideas.

I floured feeling really overwhelmed I would be tempted.to go with a simple.whire/cream on outer two walls and leave the ceter black. It's a classic monochrome sitaluation. Swap the lights for something glass to make them less stark. Simple and classic is a greatbway to go if unsure.
