North Yorkshire; where to relocate?

My husband and I are considering relocating to North Yorkshire. We have family either side of York. We have 2 kids, both primary age, and 2 dogs so we need somewhere we can accommodate everyone's needs. Fairly busy so we can keep the kids busy but rural enough that the dogs can run!

I'd be grateful for some recommendations; easy to look on a map but very different living in a place!

Harrogate. The town is buzzing and there is so much green space. When the kids are old enough they will be able to do loads under their own steam, without relying on you for lifts.

Ryedale / Helmsley - excellent schools.

I would also say Harrogate/Knaresborough or Skipton if you're happy being a little further away.

Harrogate is a really nice town with lots going on and there are some lovely villages on the outskirts which would give you the lifestyle you're looking for.

Have you any idea how far from family you would like to be?
Are you looking for state or independent schools?
Would you like to be near the coast?
How much would you like to spend on a home?
I live as far north of North Yorkshire as you can get and could talk for hours about how lovely it is ☺️

Harrogate is nice but expensive an traffic can be difficult. Maybe look at Thirsk?
East York tends to be cheaper than West as a lot of people commute to Leeds from there. Again traffic can be a pain though

Scarborough ❤️

What's your budget?

What's your budget?

£425,000 max preferably around £375 so as to take the pressure off me getting a job immediately!

Another vote for Harrogate. Has everything really and so close to beautiful countryside. There’s so much going on too ..great Yorkshire show, literary festival, comedy festival , crime writers festival, RHS Harlow Carr…

Close enough so we can help each other out but not so close they're here all the time. 😂

State school, fairly big. I.e. 180 kids or more

My husband has been itching to get back to God's Country!

Mmm..you might struggle in Harrogate for that budget if if you need a garden and 3 bedrooms

Viewfrommyhouse · 22/09/2024 17:34

I'd look at Boroughbridge and surrounding areas like Helperby, Raskelf, Thirsk etc. My pick of those would be Helperby, but it's slim pickings and not the cheapest!

Leniriefenstahl · 23/09/2024 11:49

You’ll struggle in most of those places mentioned as they’re in the most desirable parts of Yorkshire. Apart from Scarborough. Number of MNetters moving up north who are advised to move to York or Harrogate or Ilkley or Hebden Bridge is amazing 😂 Must be falling over each other.
