external bedroom door

We are about to start a garage conversion in the next few weeks and need to decide on whether to include a door/window at the back and keep going back and forth on what to do! The back of the garage has a door into the garden and because it's quite dark we want to have a window there, the builder has suggested a door. Has anyone done this and had an external door in what will be a bedroom? There's only space for a standard door width

A friend has done just done this and they have gone with a glass door, with a curtain you can pull across for privacy.

Reason being, it won't always be a bedroom and next owners could want it as an office etc.

I think it depends on who the bedroom is for. I'd love a door so I could go outside as soon as I get up in the summer.

I agree with @Aussiegold as it seems the best of both worlds - suits your situation but also future-proof when you come to sell.

Thanks, yes that’s true, it’s likely we’ll be here for the next 8-10 years but we may not need it as a bedroom for all that time.

Initially it would be for a teenager, they aren’t fussed either way what we go for. It would open into a side passage that leads out to the garden

I'd say door, but make it a very secure one especially if it opens into a dark side passage.

Door.

Potentially when your teenager is older, you might be glad that they can enter their bedroom directly and not come stomping through the house at 3am after a night out. Especially since young people are living at home well into adulthood more often. It can be more like an annex for semi-independent adult living
