Where to hang curtain rods and what colour?

Question about the curtain rods: if there is little space between the window architrave and the cornice, would it look ok if I put the rods across the architrave, or should the go into this gap above? They would of course in any case be wider than then window and the architrave.

If they're installed lower, I think I could just about get away with 3 m long curtains. If they are higher, I have to get 3,5 and shorten them to 3,15 which increases the cost and is a faff (I have two of these windows). However, I want to get it right above all!

Also, which rods would look better, black or brass? These are kids' rooms, a teen and an 8 year old, painted off white, doors have old brass handles. Furniture will be mainly white. I think I want black, but maybe brass is more in keeping with the style? I'd choose the same colour of the metal for the ceiling lamps.

Thanks for any advice!

We’ve got a few of these where there’s not much room for a pole above the window - we went for Roman Blinds instead, they are attached to a wooden batten by Velcro - the batten sits just above the window frame. Bedroom blinds are blackout lined and very effective

I'd usually say it looks much better having the curtsin pole higher, a fair bit above the top of the window frame height. Here though the gap is really small so I don't think it would matter as long as the architrave is covered.

Given the faff with having to pay more& shorten the curtains I'd put the pole where the shorter curtains work. Dont forget to measure from the correct part of the curtain, not the top if it!!

Thank you @VanCleefArpels ! I should add that on this window there will be a blind - Roman or a roller blind - for privacy and because the room is south-west facing. It cannot be blackout, because it will be drawn during the day when needed. That's why I need separate blackout curtains on a rod. In the other room I cannot put a blind because of the balcony window, it would make its opening awkward. I will need voile and blackout curtains there (both linen).

Which is the correct part @Just4thisthreadtoday? Is it 3 cm from the top or should it be 5? I think I will end up getting 3,5 m and shortening to 320 anyway :( But maybe I can get away with linen voile a bit shorter, 3m? The difference in price is huge for the voile especially.
