Can I put a logburner in a room with a gas meter?

Just that. I want to put a source of heat via a logburner OR a portable gas bottle heater in a basement room (15×15ft). There is a window, in front of which is the old gas meter (regularly checked, no leaks). Would it be dangerous to do so please?

From an air pollution point of view it definitely would. Not enough ventilation for all those particulates in a basement room. Look at a far infra red heater or other electric gear source instead.

Heat source

@deplorabelle. OK. Thanks. The room still has its original fireplace but I figured a naked flame would be unsafe. Would a bottled gas heater be safe ? (you still have to 'ignite' them?) I need to heat up the whole room - it's damp. Plus get a decent dehumidifier?

A tiny arc from turning on an electric light switch can ignite gas in a room, the log burner would be no more dangerous than any other potential source of combustion. If you have it correctly installed with adequate ventilation it should be fine.

Our gas meter is in a cupboard about 3 ft away from our chimney and log burner.

Our gas meter is about three meters from our log burner although in our front room, not a basement. There was an open fire there before, the log burner is pretty safe compared to that. I've never even considered it.

You shouldn't use calor gas in a basement. Nor should you store bottles there.
